Blade's eyes studied him for a long moment before his hand released his collar, sliding up the side of Jing Yuan's throat so he could run a calloused thumb over his jaw. "Perhaps things would have been different had I fallen into your bed instead of his." Jing Yuan's chest ached as those red eyes slid down to watch as Blade's thumb brushed his bottom lip. "There's no room for such sentimentality between us, Jing Yuan. Not when the call of the Mara drowns out everything."
"Ying—"
Blade's eyes snapped wide, his hand jerking up to curl tightly around Jing Yuan's throat, silencing him. "Don't." Blade breathed, his voice rough with barely restrained anger. "He's not here. Only the monster that now dwells within his skin."
Despite his better judgement Jing Yuan couldn't bring himself to simply relinquish the past and let it fade. Thus he found himself following the tracks of the echo of a man he'd always loved, a path that would bring them both nothing but pain.

“I apologize, but you need to undress,” Jing Yuan says. He keeps his hands behind his back like he’s afraid of them jumping out somehow.
Blade doesn’t think of the implications; that the person in front of him, someone who is practically a stranger, requested of him something so uncouth. There was a point of living where shame no longer mattered. He only wishes the stench of iron and the clumps of blood clinging to his every crevice would dissipate.
Even if Blade tried to undress, his hands wouldn’t let him. Nerves lay forever damaged in his fingers, causing his numb hands to shake and feebly grasp at the stained fabrics around his chest. The weight of seven centuries engulfs him in its exhausting embrace.
“Help me, then,” Blade requests.
Blade gives Jing Yuan an unconventional visit after a mission gone wrong. Remembering too much or nothing at all— what is worse?

He's roughly turned around, inducing a dizziness that echoes delightfully in the empty hallways of Blade's mind. The pressure of Jing Yuan's calloused fingers on his forearms tingles through him, a measured coarseness interlaced with tenderness. It's safe— a feeling Blade doesn't care for and doesn't desire, but is somehow forced to experience everytime he's here. Maybe Jing Yuan can't help but make others feel safe.
There's the clink of metal against metal, and then metal against skin. Blade relishes the way it digs into the bone of his wrist.
"You are under arrest," Jing Yuan whispers into his ear, playful air tainted by darker intent.
Blade's deliberate disobedience comes with consequences he intends to suffer— except for the one consequence he failed to predict.

Ren is going to up his bounty with the IPC, he decides. He's going to start with the designer of this stove, murdering them by bashing their head in with their own oven door. It won't fix the burnt remains of dinner mocking him from the rack, but maybe it would make him feel better.
As he stares at his ruined attempt at dinner, he thinks about the series of stupid fucking decisions that led him here.
Or, Ren thinks Jing Yuan is dissatisfied with their relationship and sets out to create the most disgustingly domestic evening imaginable for him. It sort of succeeds.

He sees the golden blood before he sees the body.
In a scene too reminiscent of that day, he follows the trail of blood. From the muddy banks of the darkened sea through fields of wheat, his feet lead him to tattered remains of what looks like a young child.
Despite the months of his persistent, single-minded pursuit of that monster that tore his home apart, he stops at the sight of the body.
An emaciated frame, dirt-streaked hair, and bony limbs bent in unnatural ways. It’s clear that the child had crawled a long way before succumbing to their wounds.
It is a relief, almost, that the child does not bear a resemblance to her, save for the gold streaming from their injuries.
A young Phainon, post the fall of his homeland, finds an even younger Mydei washed ashore.
