Ivan wakes up in a grass field full of red flowers. The air is warm and dry, and Ivan breathes it in, the ghost of rain still running down his face and the image of Till’s shocked face smeared in his vision. A beautiful blue sky looms overhead.
On his left, a boy with gray hair lays beside him, fast asleep. Ivan thinks surely even death could not be this cruel. Ivan swallows as he skims his fingers over the boy’s face.
“Till.” He says, too softly for anyone to hear.
Till stirs, his eyelids twitch, but he doesn’t wake.
Ah.
Ivan wonders which part of this is the bad dream.

"Do you not care?" Till says.
"Do you? And it's fine. There's that Arithmetic test tomorrow and I would have liked to take it. I hope you remember about that." Ivan crosses his arms. Till looks and looks and finds nothing at all.
"Ivan," Till says, in a bit of desperation.

"Because none of those things make sense." Maths is gibberish Till is convinced a bunch of old, bored guys made up because they had nothing better to do, girls are objectively terrifying, and Ivan is an incomprehensible thing playing at being a highschool heartthrob for the fun of it.

Summary
It’s not like they’re getting the bad end of the deal, Ivan argues. It’s really the opposite. All these people he matched together had never been so sickeningly happy, and they all had Ivan controlling the strings behind the scenes to thank for it. In fact, they should probably invite Ivan to their weddings as a form of gratitude or something (not that Ivan would like to go, but it’s still a nice gesture).
…Or Ivan plays cupid in the coffee shop he’s part-timing at because why not but Till (the cute and difficult regular) is very much ruining his perfect streak.

Kinosaki is an omega. He doesn’t act like one — although Hikaru knows better than to generalize now, after all of the people he’s met — but he smells and looks the part, all soft skin and a dainty, pretty scent that follows him around.

Something sparked in his eyes, and for a hopeful moment, Ivan thought Till would punch him the same way he did when they were younger. He wouldn’t be so lucky. Instead of throwing a fist into Ivan’s jaw, the boy twisted his mouth, settling it into something ugly. The rest of his face was quick to follow.
With a growl, Till grumbled, “That won’t work on me.”
”What won’t work?” Ivan prodded. If he kept going like this, Till’s fists may not turn mean but his words would; that’s all Ivan could really ask for these days–the only guarantee he’d ever dared to want from Till.
Till narrowed his eyes, “I’m not eating unless you do too.”

Till bends his head down. Somewhere along the way, his Ivan has vanished. Till sweeps Ivan’s wet hair away from his face, smooths his palm down Ivan’s broad chest to feel for the heartbeat thudding slow but solid there. He’s only trembling slightly. He puts his lips to Ivan’s ear.
‘Get the fuck up, idiot.’
Ivan opens his eyes.
In the end, Ivan comes back to Till in the form of a cryogenic chamber. (Or: Ivan and Till get worse before they get better.)

Ivan inevitably found himself standing in front of his puzzle, leaning slightly to get a better view of the boy’s face. It was the first time Ivan had ever gotten to see a black eye so close.
“Did you win or lose?” were the first words out of Ivan’s mouth.
The boy was so absentminded that he had flinched back at the simple question. For a second his sharp eyes widen before falling into two slits, a glare.
His arms tightened around himself and he huffed out a breath. “What are you talking about?”
Ivan pointed to his own eye, “Your face. Did you win or lose the fight?” His own face didn’t contort the way messy-haired playground boy’s did.

Something throbs under Till’s thumb. A beat passes. It does it again. Till looks down, confused, and realizes that his hand is gripping Ivan’s wrist, nails digging into the pale skin, his thumb jabbed right into the pulse point.
Ivan’s heart beats slowly. Ivan breathes slowly. Ivan blinks slowly, his giant eyes tilted up. When they make eye contact, Ivan’s pulse skips a beat. The only thought running through Till’s head is: huh?
“Hello,” Ivan says. “You went somewhere.”
“Uh,” Till manages. Ivan’s pulse thrums under his fingers. Why is it so soothing? Every beat of Ivan’s heart lifts a bit of the weight off Till’s chest. Is that normal?
(or: somewhere along the way, Ivan and Till "fall in love," or something like that. This changes nothing that matters, but they end up okay.)

Ivan breathes a humorless laugh. "I don't know what it is you want from me."
Till furiously snaps back, "I want you to—" before cutting himself off. He takes a deep breath and relaxes his scrunched-up facial features before continuing, quieter. "I'm your best friend. I find you half passed out in some—fucked up garden that you've been coughing up for a year, and I'm freaking out because I don't know what's going on or—or if you'll be okay, and now that I know you're okay, the doctors are saying they can't let you go because you're too damn sick to be left alone!"
His lower lip quivers ever so slightly. Ivan, for his own sake, unfocuses his eyes until Till is only a shapeless blur of colors in the middle of a sea of hospital white.
"I'm your best friend," the blur repeats, breathlessly. "I want you to fucking say something to me."
Hanahaki disease is, quite famously, a condition born from love. Ivan is convinced that his case is the exception to this rule. And when each of his friends inevitably starts catching on to his quickly deteriorating health, everything goes spinning out of control.

The best hanahaki fic i've ever read, and also one of my favorites in general. Insanely good plot, top tier characterization and writing. Will break your heart and mend it right back so tenderly. Absolutely obsessed with this kind of ivantill. Wow. I'll never recover.

The room stays silent. The child sneezes. It’s fucking adorable.
Ivan inexplicably turns into a five-year-old. Till deals with this better than he deals with his feelings for the child's fully grown counterpart.
