Summary
Viktor’s mind is sharp as a freshly honed knife, quick and nimble, grounded where Jayce’s is fanciful, bracing where Jayce is despairing, enduring where he is capricious. Through Viktor, Jayce’s ideas are refracted, splintering into a vivid rainbow of possibilities or distilling down to a beam of pure brilliance. Together, they’ve gone from stabilizing one Hexgem to crafting entire arrays of them, wowing Council members who’d previously ignored Viktor and come within a hair’s breadth of banishing Jayce.
So why does Jayce feel so goddamn insane whenever they're alone together?

Summary
Viktor is magnanimous enough to loosen his grip on Jayce’s throat, just slightly, allowing Jayce to gasp in great lungfuls of air.
“You asked why I would, as you say, do this to myself,” Viktor says nonchalantly, as though picking up a conversational thread at tea. “Most people are perfectly content with two arms; who am I to think I deserve a third?”
He leans in even closer, speaks softly. “To which I say, it’s not about what I deserve. It’s about what I desire.”
Viktor slides the Hexclaw’s free finger over Jayce’s lower lip now, depressing it at the corner; inside he can see the glistening wet pink of Jayce’s mouth, the glint of his white teeth.
“Besides,” Viktor murmurs, staring intently at Jayce’s mouth, “I think you will find that it has its uses.”

February 11th, 1990. A reading in Amherst, Massachusetts. Four students attend, three are there for extra credit, one is there for you to use, which you do, aggressively, in your rental car in the garage of your Northampton hotel. I make sure the boy makes it home and forgets the event.
The boy slides into the passenger seat.
Armand knows where they are going. The college has paid Daniel a neat speaking fee, especially neat for such a small crowd and easy pickings, and arranged for him to have a hotel some ten minutes away in Northampton. For the past two days, Daniel has parked on the always empty fourth level of the parking garage, where he can smoke a cigarette undisturbed and more.
Armand is already sitting in the shadows on a curb stop when the pair pulls in. The car reeks of Pall Malls and anxious excited sweat. He can taste the boy's daydreams. The invitation to the room, the large plush bed with too many pillows, something from the minibar, and maybe room service, if he's lucky.
And Armand already knows that Daniel has no such plans.
