They weren’t supposed to get along. In fact, Carter and Alex were meant to be the perfect example of enemies- two students thrown together against their will for a history project, their personalities clashing like oil and water. No one expected them to form any kind of bond. They weren’t meant to invade each other’s personal space, let alone unravel the tightly drawn boundaries they had carefully constructed between disdain and something that felt startlingly different.
Initially, it was just a history project. A mundane assignment, nothing more than a requirement to pass the class. Carter had seen it as just another task to tick off his list. But as they began to work together, he found himself unearthing feelings and observations he had never anticipated.
Suddenly, he was aware of Alex's absence in class. He noticed the subtle shifts in Alex's demeanor- the way his hands trembled slightly, or how his voice faltered. Carter had never paid attention to before, and now they consumed his thoughts.
