“You should leave,” he adds, for good measure. There’s silence on the other side for a moment but Steve knows it’s not that easy.
“Please. Can I come up?”
Steve should say no. If he had an ounce of self-love, he would. The problem is the way that voice shifts his world, it’s like the floor is swept from under his feet, it’s like he was frozen upside down for years and is just realizing it now.
He should say no. And yet, Steve presses the red button on his intercom, opening the front gate so that Eddie fucking Munson can waltz right back into his life.

Summary
Eventually, Eddie stopped trying to make sense of it all. He just built those walls back up and found his own place in the social hierarchy that was high school. He started Hellfire, started a band. Made friends of his own, though Eddie always felt a tiny pang of guilt that Gareth, Jeff and Frank never really knew Eddie, never knew more than what Eddie was willing to let on about himself, about his life. Eddie took great pleasure in becoming a leader regardless, fronting the band, dungeon-mastering Hellfire, corralling lost little sheepies under his wing. He didn’t want anyone feeling the way he had, timid and alone and upset with the world. Not on his watch.
He still noticed Steve in the hallways, couldn’t not notice him and the way Eddie swore hazel eyes sometimes bore into the back of his head when they crossed paths. Beseeching, tense, unable to articulate. Though that could all just be in Eddie’s head.

Summary
Without consciously deciding to, Steve reaches out and gently cups Eddie’s cheek, the rings he wears to keep his promise to Eddie gently pressing into their rightful owner’s skin. Steve thumbs away leftover slime crusted below Eddie’s eye before bending over to kiss his forehead. When Steve was a kid and his parents were still around, his mom used to call forehead kisses fairy kisses. Magic, guaranteed to cure any illness or injury. And sure, Steve is old enough to not believe in fairies anymore but there’s a certain magic to touch that he does still believe in.
If anyone were to walk in and ask why he holds Eddie’s hand, unconscious and limp in his own, that’s what he’ll tell them.

Every weekday for the past three months, the same customer comes in at the same time. So every weekday for the past two months and twenty days, Eddie has had his order ready to go before he even walks in.
The first time the man had come in, he’d dallied a little looking around. Eddie’s used to this, because half the time people come in for coffee or a game, not both, and they get distracted by the other’s existence. This man had lingered by the D&D displays, then he’d come up to the coffee bar, squinted at the thematic menu on the chalkboard on the wall, and asked if they could make a red eye with an extra shot.
And Eddie had beamed with glee and told him, “We call it a Nothic Eye here,” because he’s proud of himself for that one.
The man had chuckled and Eddie’s knees had weakened at the sound.
OR:
The Party asks Eddie to host a Valentine's Dance at his game store/coffee shop. And Eddie does, because he cannot say no to them.
