The mirror's surface is half-covered in condensation, the air still hot and humid from Kirk's recent shower. Through the slowly rolling droplets, Spock sees his arms, tense with effort as he grips onto the sink to hold himself up. He sees his bare chest, damp from sweat and flushed slightly green. He sees his own face, as blank and empty as any Vulcan's.
But more importantly, Spock sees his captain.

Damian has nice hands. They’re a lot bigger than Tim’s are, but that only makes sense, given their respective heights. Damian’s fingers are long and thin. As he works, Tim muses on the fact that Damian’s hands are softer than one might expect. Not without their callouses, and there’s a few distinctive, ropey scars on his left knuckles, but mostly Damian’s hands are soft and warm to the touch.

Jason had done hours of homework there, kneeling on the bench seat of the breakfast nook and reading interesting snippets from his textbooks out loud as Alfred prepared dinner. He’d learned to bake standing on a chair, a spare apron that was way too long on him tied around his waist as he listened to Alfred’s instructions and breathed in his familiar bergamot smell. He’d learned he could be good at something besides violence and survival.

It looked the same, now, when he stepped into it: the same mile-long oven range, the same polished marble counter, the same afternoon sun streaming in through the windows. But it felt different. Stripped, like a room where all the paintings had been taken down but the shape of where they’d been was still visible on the walls.

He ran his hand over the butcher block in the center of the room, feeling the nick where he’d once dropped a heavy knife and chipped away a piece of the wood. He’d braced himself, but Alfred hadn’t been mad at all. Just relieved Jason hadn’t been hurt.

“I’m sorry,” he said into the empty air.

"Let me try again," he says.

Jaskier shifts, his voice turning faint. "What?"

Geralt turns to look at him with an ache in his chest. "I know I won't remember. I know you must have been… patient with me, to still be here after so long. Not just in the loop—before it."

    "Geralt," Jaskier says wetly.

"Let me try again, Jask," Geralt begs. "If there's a version of me that doesn't run, I wanna be him."

He hasn’t moved and he keeps staring at her. He still looks like he’s going to be sick. Is she really that bad? Well, she must be.

“Look, I asked you to change me because I wanted you to like me,” she explains, “but you don’t like me, because I’m all, you know, social media and wifi and whatever. Which is cool,” she wonders if this is what slitting your own wrists feels like, “because you know, I kinda like who I am, most of the time. I mean, you’ve helped a lot, but I’m not ever gonna be the type of girl that can, I don’t know, watch paint dry with you and get excited about it like you and Julia do. But you don’t have to worry, I’m not going to pressure you into anything!” she concludes brightly. “I won’t tell anyone, and if anyone finds out, like don’t even worry. They totally won’t judge you for not wanting me, no one –” wants me, she thinks but doesn’t say because she needs to fix this for Henry but she still has to be able to walk out of this office without breaking down completely. So what if her family doesn’t approve of her and she doesn’t have any friends and her soulmate doesn’t love her. She’s the top sales rep and – and the prettiest girl in the office. “So you can totally forget about it!” she beams, “In fact, just forget this entire conversation. That would be like totally perfect!”

“Memorizing,” Damian corrected, eyes flicking along each stray lock of Tim’s hair in the sheets, along the curl of each eye lash. Tim felt his heart thud against his ribs, felt his stomach knotting up, and he smiled, smiled so real it almost hurt, and Damian returned it. Tim saw the light all the way up in his jade eyes.

“Superboy,” Clark says, and Superboy, says Kal-El inside, flaring up and spilling out red and yellow light into the flickering ghost of a bond between them—a sun, another sun. His son.

The kind of love a man on a doomed planet felt for him, once, when his life was worth dying for.

In the dark, something grips his crushed and clinging arm. For a second the killing weight lightens, and Clark grabs onto that presence in the impenetrable dark and drags it to him.

Superboy falling out of the black into his arms is the one most perfect moment of Clark and Kal-El and Superman's life.

“D-Dad,” Superboy stutters again, looking anywhere but at Clark, and the sunspot inside flares again and nature and nurture and every part of Clark spills the same things into the bond: relief and fear and mine, my own.

Superboy's hand fists in the red and yellow fabric of the El crest—their crest—and Clark wraps his arms around a body free of the dark, a body with a sun inside it, and holds on for everything he's worth. More than that, everything Superman is worth, and everything Lara and Jor-El thought Kal-El was worth too.

That, exactly, is everything Superboy is.

Superboy cries into his chest and that crest, and Clark understands it all.

She wants to go out and be free with what little family she's found for herself, there to look out for her, to be beside her, to come out to live like people were supposed to live, to fight for the right to exist on their own terms. She thought she'd chosen something to die for, but this is different and she wants different.

She wants people to whisper about BK-1245, the woman who stole Stormtroopers away; about JM-2002 and JM-2003, the brothers who stayed together through everything, about all of them. She wants them to hear the Story of Finn, which seems almost impossible when one took a step back, and then to hear their story too and realize that it's true. All of it.

Doublo wants them to tell the story of JN-1500, the Stormtrooper that told the Story of Finn against the will of the First Order and then chose to follow him down the path he forged for all of them. For them to tell each other that she's still out there, free and fighting, just like Finn.

I want to be like Finn, she realizes. I want to live too.

She told herself that her work was more important than a relationship, but really she was just scared. Scared, and self-conscious, and still a hurt kid inside—a kid who spent her whole life having people tease her, and mock her, and side-eye her whenever she said anything, and assume she was crazy, and weird, and not the kind of person you’d want to be friends with. Erin had grown up believing them. She let herself believe that nobody would ever take her seriously, or want to get to know her. Want to listen to what she had to say. And that extended to relationships, too. To be with someone else was to let them close, let them hear the things that nobody else could, and Erin was terrified of that. There was a big part of her that truly still believed that any sane person would laugh if she shared her soul with them. Take the secrets she had worked so hard to keep and run with them, out into the street, brandishing them like a grenade, ready to explode Erin’s carefully crafted life.

But Holtzmann wasn’t a sane person. And Holtzmann, while talented at causing explosions, was also great at fixing them.

He stopped there, his own fists clenched, looking up at Megatron challengingly, as if he deserved an answer to that question, as if he had any right to come back here, as if Megatron owed him something. As if he had—sacrificed his own life to save Megatron from a monstrous and self-inflicted enslavement of body and mind. As if he had wanted to do that, because he’d known what it was—I gave up my body, my mind—to be the property of a god.

The last lingering ancient threads of anger were exiting completely, dying as they flowed through Megatron’s emotional subsystem. Regret, cool and ashen and unfamiliar, took up their processing time. He’d so rarely ever bothered with it. Regret, and the dull weariness returning, the deferred burden of a thousand years of war. Even pride was slipping away before them now, his final defense. His hands had already uncurled from their clenched fists; his combat modules had never made it online. And he did, after all, owe Orion an answer.

“I love you,” he said. The words felt strange in his own audio receptors: like new information coming in, even though he was the one saying them. He hadn’t allowed himself to even think them before.

That sounds exactly like a reason to turn tail and run to Genji, but he doesn’t. McCree is in close enough to touch him again; to lay a hand right over the plate in his chest. He doesn’t, because of course he doesn’t. Why would he want to?
