“My Abuela said it,” Silvio insists. “She said you have to wear the hat, because you have a pale ass so you’re going to get skin cancer and die before Lance even wakes up.”
Keith looks between the children and the hat, too confused to glare, sweaty and horrid from pulling weeds beneath the scorching sun. “What?”
“That’s wrong,” Nadia complains, and yanks her brother down to her level to whisper the correction in his ear.
“Ooh,” Silvio amends. “Tía Veronica said you have a pale ass. My Abuela said you’re gonna die.”

When Lance is fatally wounded during their final battle, the blue lion enters a deep hibernation with Lance inside. Unsure when or if he’ll wake, Keith is forced to wait and watch over him in the company of the people he fears most: Lance’s family.

[ Instead, feeling raw beneath Lance’s adoring gaze, he mumbles, “And how long would you give yourself?”
Lance scoffs. “Me?”
He hums, considering. Keith’s fingers find the junction between Lance’s flight suit and skin as he waits for an answer. He wishes he could rip that suit off, not for the purpose of seeing Lance unclothed, but so he can pretend the war is over. He can pretend they’re lying side by side at the beginning of their lives, not the end.
“I’m sure I’d try,” Lance says. “Maybe. If you died, left me all alone,” he drawls. “Eventually I’d try fall in love again. I’d try really hard, cause when haven’t I?” He laughs softly, and takes Keith’s hand in his own. He turns it over, thumb tracing the veins of his palm. “But there’d be something off, about everyone. Something that would just…turn me away. Too cheery. Too gloomy. Too fucking…agreeable, or something.”
Lance’s gaze loses focus, stirring up the dusty ground around them. “I’d try, but I don’t think anyone would feel right. I’d reach the end of my life, and realise that… That the whole time, I was looking for you.”
The words settle like rain, blocking out all distraction, all of existence outside that bubble. Keith opens his mouth, trying to speak, but finds he is submerged in Lance’s answer. Nothing he says will compare. Nothing will give those words the weight they deserve. ]
---
[ “Why did you sound like that in the recording?” she asks roughly. “You sounded like you were dying.”
Silence settles over the car. Like he was dying, huh? Keith supposes that much is true. Only he isn’t sure why Rachel is even bringing this up, and why now, right before he leaves.
“I sounded like that,” Keith says slowly, choosing his words carefully, “because I…”
Not careful enough. He finds himself at a blockade, a terrible splinter lodged in his throat. He releases a shuddering breath.
“Because we were out there for three years,” Keith says dully. “Three years, and the only thing that made it all worth it, was if I… Was if he came back.”
Rachel still grips the wheel, though they’ve ceased to move. She stares straight ahead, into the intersection of the headlights and the dwindling twilight.
“I wanted to bring him home,” Keith says softly. “I promised him I would. I… I loved him so much, I– Everything would be worth it, if he came home.”
“So,” he continues slowly, “I failed in the worst way a person can fail. Shot myself in the foot. Shot… Everything. Every future, every moment of my life, every moment of his.” Keith draws a deep breath, shuddering. “You know we… We lost so much, and so much time, so much life. But I thought, uh, we thought, that it wouldn’t be too much to ask for, to sort of, have one life. Between us. Maybe we’d each lost something of our own, but, if we led a life together, it… It made everything feel alright.” ]

Compared to the pleasant, humid warmth of Ragunna, the wind in Septimont is scorching. [ Would Hong Lu still have that stupid, tranquil smile plastered on his face if Rodion plunged a shard of glass deep into that jade eye? Whatever procedure he underwent for it must have cost a breathtaking amount of Ahn. In a desperate past, Rodion would look at modifications like those and wonder how much food she’d be able to buy with the money it took to get rigs like those. Or maybe she’d finally be able to afford a nice shampoo to rinse out all the accumulated grime and blood matting her hair—maybe then the rich folk with gemstones for eyes wouldn’t look at her with such contempt. Or even worse than contempt: indifference. Serene indifference is only afforded to the rich, to those with the privilege of having long, lush hair and spotless alabaster skin and a fucking jade eye that gets duller and duller the more you look at it. ]

But Rodion knows, too. She shakes her head; defiant as him. Not pest. Not vermin. Not The Roach Emperor Valencina had crowed about. Nothing what G Corp forced him to be. That's not their Gregor, not when they know him better than anyone else. Their Gregor is cranky. Always complaining about his back. Their Gregor makes jokes that has everyone cringing slightly. Their Gregor is bitter and lonely and kind.

[ Theon laughed and jumped down. He picked up his sword from where he’d left it propped against the tree. “This time I’ll fight the both of you to rescue her.”
Jon picked himself up with a frown. “You can’t be the hero.”
Robb nodded. “Everyone knows Greyjoys are villains.”
Theon’s hand tightened on the hilt of his sword until his knuckles ached. If they’d been brothers in true, he would have thrashed them for that. Rodrik would have. They weren’t his brothers though. They were his friends, his captor’s children. They were as close as he’d get to what Lord Stark had promised.
Theon made himself laugh. “I’ll show you a villain,” he shouted and charged, gently though, playfully. They fled laughing instead of in tears. ]

After being called upon to come pick Theon up from the hospital, Robb is understandably concerned. The last he'd heard, Theon was just supposed to be on a date. [ Question. What did you want all that power for?
The imaginary Vergil in his mind would pause, and his voice would melt into V’s. “I just wanted to be protected and loved,” V said. “Without power, you can’t protect anything.”
Question. Who would you protect?
Nero had to squeeze his eyes shut as tight as they would go, but the Vergil in his mind would soften and say, “You, of course.”
Question. Do you want to meet Kyrie?
“My future daughter in law? I want to meet her right away.”
Question. Why did you give me V’s book?
“My book,” Vergil would correct. “It was the only thing I could give you at the time. I would give you the world if I had one kept in my pocket.” ]

She shifts onto her side to face him. She doesn’t say anything, but she reaches out and takes his hand.
Nero grabs her and pulls her on top of him, squeezing her torso and taking long, shuddering breaths into her hair. Kyrie hums and positions herself in a slightly better position for hugging him back, but otherwise doesn’t move away.
“I love you,” Nero whispers.
“I love you too,” Kyrie says. “And don’t worry about your family, Nero. They’ll come back.”
He blinks, twice, hard. “How do you know?”

In death, Koyuki had never felt more alive.
Bookmarked by foolstroupe

Bookmarker's Notes
[ This was what Koyuki reminded Hakuji of:
That summer they first met as children, the first time they ate dinner together, the soba cold and slick on their tongues. The first punch he threw, not in defense, but as a practice, as he was now, and forever will be, Keizo’s chosen student. Where Koyuki would stay shaded in the house, Hakuji would perch on the porch as he watched over her, and do you remember how nice it felt, Hakuji? The sun—do you remember how it kissed your skin, how it dried your wet clothes and made the garden shine golden and brought life onto the flowers? Do you remember how you carried me upon your back, in those early days when I was the weakest, just so I could have a taste of it, too?
Those books I read to you, of daring swordfights in far-off lands, of epic romances and true love and kisses that were strong enough to break any curse—do you remember how it goes, Hakuji? You used to act indifferent whenever I got to the happy ending, but do you honestly think that I couldn’t see how your cheeks reddened, how the blush spread to the tip of your ears? Even my father knew how much of a romantic you are, Hakuji—the kindest boy he’s ever met, he said. Did you know that, Hakuji? Did you know how fond he was of you, how happy he was to have you? Hakuji, did you know that his last words had been a prayer for you?
Hakuji. Do you remember the fireworks? Do you remember your last promises, Hakuji? Do you know that there is one that you still get to fulfil?
Hakuji
Hakuji, Hakuji.
My Hakuji.
Do you know that I would take the sickness and the pain tenfold if I got to have you again? ]

[ “Why did she tell you ?” Giyuu asked back.
“No idea.” Sanemi murmured. “She said it was top secret, so very few people were supposed to know, but I’m pretty sure all the hashira knew. I sorta assumed you did too.
Giyuu tightened his lips. Shinobu had offhandedly told him she hated the scent of wisteria. He could always smell it around her, like a toxic gas. Kanae liked the smell of wisteria, and once Giyuu had met her again a couple weeks later, with Kanae’s haori, Kanae’s quirks, Kanae’s personality, Kanae’s smile, he thought the scent was the same deal.
Who would have guessed she had thirty-seven kilograms of poison running through her veins?
How many people had Shinobu told? Why was Giyuu left out? He could’ve stopped her, and her suicidal journey. She still had a chance to settle down or get married, live out a good life. Why had she become so obsessed with vengeance for her sister?
Oh. He could’ve stopped her.
None of the other hashira had. Shinobu had also been excellent at reading people, so she must’ve figured out earlier that none of them would stop her. But she knew that Giyuu would have tried. ]

[ “I could live here,” Augusta repeated. The words came easier this time. “I could be only Augusta. No crown. No oaths made on the steps of a temple. Only… this.” She glanced down to where their knees touched. “Only us.”
Iuno’s fingers sought Augusta’s hand and found it. Their palms pressed together; their fingers laced. The fit felt inevitable, the way a blade finds its scabbard. “A day may come when we choose that,” Iuno said. “I do not know that the gods would approve. But I have learned, at last, that my heart is not theirs to command.”
“And what if the city calls again?” Augusta asked. Not as a challenge; as a confession. “What if the Plateaus roar tomorrow? I do not know how to be anything but the one who goes. I don’t know how to walk away.”
Iuno turned their joined hands and kissed the place where Augusta’s thumb met her palm. The warrior flinched - not from pain, but from the avalanche of tenderness such a small act unstopped. “Then do what you have always done,” Iuno said, voice barely a breath. “Go. But go for the living, not for glory. And come back, not for the city first, but for me.” ]

The first time Hashirama sees the Hiraishin in action, he hardly knows what it means, let alone what it is. [ There is something in the river, Hashirama realizes. There is something in the river and it has hair the color of moonlight and the fingers of an artist if they were not so calloused and blood, so much blood, vibrant and scarlet and spreading through the water, and its face is half-hidden under the water but Hashirama — Hashirama knows the curve of its nose, the fan of its pale lashes, the start of its cheekbone, has memorized them ever since the wild Hatake woman had clawed at his shoulders as Father’s baby came too-fast and too-hard and too-big between her shaking legs, Hashirama’s hands reaching for it as it fell, the pulse of freshwater–new moon–hello settling into his bones at the touch, waking up the part of him that is sunlight–strong bark–life that had rested dormant for centuries in his body. Mother had tried to take it from Hashirama, had raved about bloodlines and bastards and bitches, but Hashirama loved it and the Hatake woman called it —
Hashirama is in the river before he even realizes it, already shoving his hands into the water to catch Father’s baby again, to pull him up and keep him close because those are Tobirama’s curls and Tobirama’s hands and Tobirama’s face and Tobirama’s blood. It is Tobirama, and Hashirama loves him. ]
---
[ “Get out,” he says, and everything wooden in the house tilts, listening. “Don’t you come near him.”
“Hashirama, you must accept —”
“Out!” He roars the word and they flee — cowards, he can hear Tobirama mutter, can’t we get new ones, anija? — but he hates how much he sounds like Butsuma when he does. His daughter seems to agree. She wakes, screaming, in her nursery, and with clumsy hands, he tries to calm her. Mito appears in the doorway, and Hashirama holds their child out to her.
“I didn’t mean to,” he says.
“Hashirama,” Mito breathes, coming closer, and her hands are cool when they touch his face; her fingertips come away wet. “Oh, my husband.”
“I didn’t mean to hurt —”
She kisses him gently, deliberately, and simply Mito, and it breaks him. Hashirama cries loud enough to put his daughter to shame, ugly and heaving, and it feels like bark twisting away, like the crack of branches and the triumph of broken roots, and he cannot breathe. Mito slides her hand over his chest, petting him, and she tips her head into his jaw. His nose fills with her perfume, and he clutches at her hard enough to bruise, careful of the tender line of their daughter still stuck in his arm.
“They’re fine. They’ll both be fine,” she murmurs to him, over and over and over again until the words sink straight into his heart. “You aren’t your father, and she isn’t Kawarama. Tobirama isn’t Itama.”
“I was — I was so —”
His words catch in his throat.
“Scared?”
Hashirama closes his eyes, ashamed. Shinobi do not cry. Senju do not cry, and yet here he is, his war-grown body too big for his peace-made house. ]
