    “Captain Vallis,” he introduces himself. “This your courtroom, ma’am?”

    “Unfortunately,” she sighs. “We were just about to get started when the alarm started blaring. I think one of the jurors pulled it. One’s of ‘em’s freshly 18, so I assume they wanted out. I’m terribly sorry to pull you guys out here on a false alarm.”

    Damen waves his hand in the air next to him in a dismissive motion. “Don’t worry, it happens more often than you’d think. I still gotta check it out though. Protocol.”

    He stops in his tracks when his gaze lands on a man who’s tapping his foot and rummaging through a folder he likely grabbed on the way out. Damen can’t see his face from where he is, but he can make out tamed blond hair and fair skin that contrast his dark clothing perfectly.
