    Summary

Billions of years in the future, the sun has finally reached the end of its life cycle as a star: it has become a red giant about to swallow the planet Earth, and Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp, now vaguely human-shaped entities, have finally reached the end of their immortal existence. Humanity has long since died, and they are left on what remains of the planet, with no one else but themselves, ready to face the end.

    Summary

Four years after Madeline Ashton's wedding to Ernest Menville, Helen Sharp is still locked away in a mental institution. She's getting slightly “better” according to the counselors' standards — her new secret “elimination” plan and the beginnings of a memoir provide an outlet for her disturbed thoughts — but she's still as obsessed as ever with Madeline, the woman who stole her life and her ex-fiancé.

But when a mysterious man named Chagall pretending to be her new counselor at therapy hands her a business card from the elusive Viola Van Horn, claiming that Viola’s treatment is the solution Helen needs to fix her own life, suddenly things begin to look up. It's a bit suspicious — the business card promises to give her perfection and immortality, impossible concepts Helen has only seen discussed in fantasy or science fiction — but if it means destroying Madeline and finally bettering herself...maybe Helen might consider this strange “treatment,” as dubious as it sounds.

    -OR-

    Summary

Helen soon after turns to Madeline, staring daggers into her with her teeth bared. “Next time, I won’t be so nice.”

Madeline’s face contorts into a disgusting, mocking smile in response. “I knew you didn’t have it in you,” the blonde spits at the redhead.

Those words only fill Helen with even more rage. Who is Madeline to think that Helen was still the same weak and mousy woman from before? Helen is a changed woman now; unlike her old self, she would never let Madeline walk all over her anymore. Never again.

So, in an unthinkable, impulsive act that her old self would have never dared to do, Helen forcefully grabs the blonde’s face and kisses her ferociously. Fuck it. If Madeline was going to fuck Helen over for twenty years and counting, Helen might as well fuck with her too, in her last moments before death.

    -OR-

In a moment of sheer madness, Helen kisses Madeline just before pushing her down the stairs to her death.

    Summary

“Your family has all the money in the world…and yet you still choose to dress like a grandma??” Madeline exclaims, glaring with contempt at the boring, mostly beige outfit that Helen had picked out to wear for the day. “God, if I were you, Hel, I’d be buying from designer brands every day! Not those boring ass turtlenecks you’re so fond of!”

“Not everyone wants to wear designer brands, Madeline,” Helen retorts. “Maybe I like my boring ass turtlenecks, as you call them. Maybe I feel happy and comfortable in them.”

    -OR-

Madeline and Helen argue about clothes, and some ugly truths come to light.

    Summary

    Madeline Ashton has died.

Those words cause Helen Sharp to be shaken out of her early morning stupor.

“After she failed to respond to her husband’s calls in the morning, the actress was then reported missing,” the news anchor continues. “Using the location data from her cell phone, Ashton’s car as well as her dead body were eventually found partially buried at the bottom of a cliff later that day by the police. Ashton was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.12%.”

    Dead. Buried. In a ditch.

Was this real? Helen still couldn’t believe it. Madeline was actually dead. Deceased. Not alive.

That blonde bitch that she despised for so long was finally dead.

    Truly, irrevocably dead.

Helen should be happy. This should be a joyous occasion, a cause for celebration. She didn’t even have to do it by her own hand.

But this…? This made her feel…oddly empty. Wrong. All of it in a way that it shouldn’t be.

    -OR-

Madeline commits suicide just before Helen's book premiere and Helen reckons with her unexpected feelings of grief.
