Summary
“I’m sorry,” Ritchie said, not knowing why.
Paul said, with strange, distant eyes, “George hasn’t strung that many words together in months.”
Memory: the black-haired, black-eyed boy perched birdlike on a pub stool, chattering away. Ritchie felt dimly nauseous. “Changed,” Paul said, “our Georgie has,” as if he could see into Ritchie’s mind. “You understand now, don’t you? Why we have to get out?”

Summary
He felt Hancock’s presence between them, even as Armistead’s desperate hands searched under his coat, under his shirt to his skin. Ghost of a living man. Ghost of love. Don’t think about that. Hancock was not the only one.

Summary
Tommy had worked his right shoe off and was running his toes up Nick's thigh, a familiar glaze of panic over his eyes. Anyone who'd ever been in police custody would've had the same look. He was struggling against the cuffs, a slight whine in his breathing, hips lifting off the floor. "Hey," he was saying, "hey, big man, you ain't goin' nowhere, right?" His tongue was flicking snakelike behind his teeth, and there was a fierce glint in his eyes, a bright flare of desperation, casting a deep shadow: a look Nick wouldn't want to meet in a sealed cell. "Right?"

Summary
Suddenly, and as clearly as if he read it in the histories in the Benning library, Ron envisions this strong, sad-faced man bleeding into grey French earth, and then gathered up, dead, by the enemy, bound for a mass grave. He wants to seize the sergeant’s hand and drag him away from Herbert Sobel’s company, make him impossible promises, swear on God that although he may die he will never be led foolishly and his life will not go to waste. Ron stands very still. He is a stranger to himself. He can’t remember ever wanting anything so much, except death.

Summary
Bull takes a long swig. Compared to the grain alcohol he used to nurse in the hayloft with his older brother on warm summer nights, it tastes like cranberry juice. A trickle runs down his chin, but he's indifferent to it.
Johnny blinks and swallows hard. Bull smiles, chuckles, almost inaudibly, at nothing in particular, and tugs gently at Johnny's sleeve.
"Stayin' or goin'?"

Summary
At five Kyuzo sits on his mother's lap as she lets him pull a jade comb through her long, loose hair. The comb is inlaid with gold and fashioned in the shape of a blossoming tree branch. He prefers it to all of his toys.
He has an older brother and two younger sisters, and he is smaller than the smallest one. His mother calls him her wolf cub and her little treasure. His father says, "If you keep spoiling that child so, he will not grow up to be a warrior."
***
At fifteen he is sheltering from the snow under a cheap rooming house roof, sharing the space with two other ronin, a day laborer and a family made homeless by an avalanche. It's been two years since he tore the clan crests off his kimono.

Kikuchiyo kicks dirt over his own attempts at writing, crosses the room, and sits directly next to Kyuzo.

Summary
"There was something you said, when... that day, in the Great Hall... s-something my cousin did, to-- to women, at Naeseonjae..." Beom-pal says. "What did she do?"
Chi-rok looks at Beom-pal's soft face, his large eyes.
He swallows. "Perhaps it's better that you don't know."
"It probably is," Beom-pal says. "But I need to."

It is a good night. Already Kyuzo can smell the rain that's coming, but they have time yet to sit by the fires. Much is coming; they have time yet.
He tells himself that.

Summary
"What you asked of me then, on the shore... I cannot... I no longer have the power to..." The words seem to thicken and swell in his throat, choking him. "I am-- nothing now. So-- you may as well--"
He has just enough time to pull his knees to his chest, duck his head and hide his face behind his folded arms before the tears come. It's not like it was in the hall of his ancestors; they do not come singly.
Yeong-shin makes a noise, some motion Chang can sense rather than see--

Summary
With his hat off in the fading light Speirs looks younger than he is; Lipton tries to picture him still younger than that, and fails. Could he have ever been a child? Does he have parents? Siblings? A bride and children of his own? It all seems impossible. If only every army could be composed of such men, Lipton thinks. Wars could be won without women’s grief. Perhaps without grief at all.
No, he’s wrong about that and he knows it.

Summary
When Robbie finally turns to look at him, Bob's taking his shades off. They're almost opaque black and he wears them indoors and outdoors and in bright sun and dim light and rain and the nighttime darkness. The shades are like a door he can lock. Or unlock, when he wants to. His eyes are blue like Levon's and very clear.

Summary
"Look, the words move, they take me somewhere. The music just--" Robbie gestures with his finger. "Plods around in a circle. We gotta figure out where these songs start and where they end, so we have a map and we don't get lost."
"They start when I start singing and they end when I stop, Robbie," Bob says, "it's not complicated--"
"Shh," Robbie says suddenly, "here it comes--"
