He’s reclined on his side, back turned as Yusuf finishes changing into his sleeping clothes. Yusuf smiles at him even though he can’t see it.
“I saw,” he says, “an old woman.”
It’s a testament to how well Nicolò knows him, after these five years together, that he doesn’t call this into question.

"We worked as caravan guards before we came to Baghdad," Nicolò said, which was true enough, as far as it went. His hand rested easily on the pommel of his sword and he was smiling, a faint and casual enjoyment of his own assurance, and Yusuf loved him desperately.
"Just like old times," Yusuf agreed, and tossed his bag over to the handlers on the barge.
Nicolò looked over at him, his face suddenly, awfully, blank, and that was the end of that.
In the wake of the Frankish conquest of Tyre, Joe and Nicky leave their settled home in Baghdad in order to help a friend. Naturally, things escalate from there.
