a perfectly normal demon-extermination mission.The cheers from the spring festival echoed through the night—laughter, music, the popping of small fireworks, and the sweet aroma of tteokbokki and grilled meat. Just a few hundred meters away, people were celebrating life.
Here in the dark of Namsan Park, it was quiet.
Almost quiet.
“The horde is thinning out,” Rumi whispered, never taking her eyes off the last demon, which was still twitching.
“The big one’s coming soon,” Mira replied calmly, wiping her cheek with the back of her hand. “I can smell him already.”
Zoey landed feather-light beside them, gave a lopsided grin, and pointed a thumb over her shoulder. "And that one over there smells like… tteokbokki and freshly grilled meat."
Mira and Rumi look at Zoey in confusion.

“You have got to be kidding me,” Baby suddenly hissed as realization struck. “The fucking Bird cursed us!”

Jinu blinks slowly at her. It almost reminds her of a cat. When he opens his mouth, his teeth look sharper. “You shouldn’t be here.” He says.
Again, her heart drops. “I know.” She croaks out, suddenly feeling so very fragile again. “But the Honmoon rejected me. My friends turned against me. I have no one— nothing, now. And it’s what I deserve. You were right. Demons like us just… Get to live with our pain.”
“…No.” Jinu says slowly, taking another step forward. That power, Rumi realizes, it’s coming from him. But he’s never had power like that before— how did he get it? “No, Rumi, I mean you shouldn’t be here. This world— it isn’t yours. How did you get here?”
(Or Rumi leaves the Idol Awards broken and betrayed. What’s left of her Honmoon brings her to another world where the Honmoon did turn golden, but they were not better off for it. Despite the bleakness of this future, it may give her the answers, and clarity, she needs to fix her own.)

“Shh, I know, I know,” he hushes her, all tender and sweet, all cruel and mean as she feels rather than sees the smile curving up his lips. The intent flashing in his gaze, the hint of something heavy in gold. “You like me so much you can’t help yourself. I get it.”
There’s that coy flirtation in his voice again; that cockiness like it doesn’t mean anything. But it does and she knows because his tone wavers, because he doesn’t laugh and his fingers stutter into a pause before losing their rhythm. Fast and uncoordinated, only a frantic pace that almost seems like he’s angry, like he’s pleading. Like he has to break her or else she’ll look elsewhere.
Jinu, Rumi — and everything that is routine, that is left said and unsaid.

Summary
The bathhouse ambush follows the same old script, the same old plot.
He changes it up, just a tad. Rumi holds out her sword to him, both of them circling each other in a dance, and Jinu decides screw it.
He steps forward, she prepares for war, but the tip of her sword touches his chest, right where his heart should be. The sword glows and crackles, reacting to him, pulsing in time with his breath; Rumi’s eyes dart to it then back on Jinu, wide and unsure.
He smiles. “Hey Rumi, what am I supposed to do?”
And then he walks into her blade. It pierces him true, and he relishes holding her, if only for a mere fraction of a second, their time limited.
Just when things start to fade away, he hears it, barely: “J-Jinu?”
Rumi’s single word keeps echoing in his head, all he can hear. She shouldn’t have known his name yet. She shouldn’t have that gentle a tone yet.
Every time Jinu dies, he's flung back in time to right after the first Soda Pop performance. Why and how, he knows not. All he knows is Rumi is there with his soul each and every time.
