The phone rings.
Eyes open and misty, Dean stares across the diner table, where just seconds before, a man with bright blue eyes sat, their fingers tangled atop the checkerboard vinyl. His phone is nowhere in sight, nowhere within reach—yet it rings, growing increasingly louder as the noise of the diner fades away, as black tinges the corners of his fantasy. “No,” he groans, bowing his head.
Another second, and the dream bleeds away, fading into nothingness. Another ring, and the phone silences, no longer rattling the nightstand. Quiet—blissful quiet, yet Dean refuses to open his eyes, still clinging to the hand he held, the hand that’s no longer there.

Summary
Dean lives in a house with a white picket fence and has a day job as a mechanic. He’s out of hunting and, he finally gets to settle down with Cas.
Suddenly, he comes to the violent realization that none of this is real— it’s all a dream, manufactured by a djinn. He gets out and reality comes crashing down on him— he’s still in the life, he’s not in a relationship with Cas. And there’s his problem: how does he lose something he never had?
Now, he’s trying to navigate his non-romantic relationship with Cas, which is more strained than it’s been in a long time. It’s hard enough on its own, even without Sam and Jack insisting that Cas is in love with him too, and that they could have been in the same djinn dream.
Dean does what Winchesters do best: throwing himself into the job and not talking. But that doesn’t keep the lines between him and Cas from blurring. They blur and they blur and they blur and they blur, and who’s to say what’s really real?

A man emerges from behind a curtain, dressed in a black tank top and holey jeans. Ink decorates both of his arms from shoulder to wrist, and a silver hoop hangs from one earlobe. His face looks remarkably the same, his eyes the same vibrant green, his cheeks and jaw solid; a scar stretches across his right temple, silvered and faded. He pulls on a blue flannel shirt, hiding his skin—then stops, his face lifted and horror in his eyes.
Castiel struggles not to bite his tongue. Struggles to breathe, really, his legs little more than rubber. He can’t move, can’t function. It’s not supposed to hurt like this, he thinks. Somehow, he manages to stand. “Dean,” he says. Barely a breath—barely a whisper, yet it feels like a scream. The first time he’s said his name in days. It feels like a blessing.
