    Charles has shared more than he is used to with Arthur and, in turn, Arthur has done the same. Charles knows Arthur loves Hosea and Dutch like his fathers, John like his brother. He knows Arthur has had his heart broken in the past, even if he doesn’t know by who. He knows he wears his hat like a suit of armour and tugs it down whenever he’s feeling vulnerable.

    He knows his journal is his most prized possession.

    So the first time Arthur leaves his journal in plain view of Charles, it stumps him a bit.

    "Charles shrugs, and fiddles with the cigarette pinched between his fingers. Ash flutters from the bud of it. 'I dunno. Think I like bein’ alone. Could go off and do my own thing for a while, come back to a place I could call home without leavin’.'

    Arthur nods, and smiles at him. 'Well,' he mutters, 'if you ever get too lonely, you can come by my ranch.'

    'And give you a hand with those horses. Lord knows you’ll need it.' Charles gets up, throws his cigarette to the ground and crushes it beneath the heel of his boot. 'Goodnight, Arthur.'

    '‘Night, Charles.'"

    Charles and Arthur go hunting once, twice, and a few more times.
