Summary
Will could have hesitated for the smallest part of a second, trying to figure out if he should attempt to make him come to his senses but he doesn't, and so he uses that extra heartbeat to throw himself at Jeffery in aim for the gun. When the piercing pain of a bullet going through his chest hits him, the trajectory of the projectile is slightly different as it could have been, just an inch to the right, but is enough for it to barely miss his heart entirely and make his left lung collapse instead.
And just like that, reality splits.
