In an attempt to soften his son to the idea of a mate, he invites Lord Baratheon and his heir, Lyonel, to visit them at the keep for the summer knowing the two have been amicable in the past. Maekar is resistant to the young lord as he only has eyes for his beloved brother, Baelor, who has promised they will be wed.
Lyonel thinks marrying an omegan prince is not so bad an idea.

Prince Maekar Targaryen was twelve years old when he presented as an omega, and twelve years old when the court decided his body was worth more than his will.
A royal omega meant alliance. Children. Useful dragonblood.
So King Daeron gave him to a widowed Lannister lord with no heirs.
Baelor, his prince, tried to save him. He bargained with gold, promises, blood, and pieces of the king he had not yet become.
It was not enough.
On the eve of his wedding, Maekar died.
Or so everyone believed.
Years later, a wandering knight rides toward Ashford with a boy too tall for his wits and a sharp-tongued, silver-haired bastard named Aisel Rivers, who smokes bitter herbs, bites harder than he smiles, and knows too much about princes, poisons, and how to become his own self.
So, a dead prince, a false dragon, a drunken prophet, and a knight with more heart than caution walk into Ashford.
And that is almost the beginning of a joke. -

Daeron’s gaze shot to his father. How long had it been since he’d said such a thing? It was the truth, of course, but after a time it became a truth that Maekar avoided acknowledging out loud. His father looked back to him and the heat in his gaze was gone. There was no hatred, nor resentment. No anger remained. He just looked tired, more tired than Daeron could ever remember him being.
“This is a great honor,” he said again. “You will be a queen.”

Baelor makes the decision to wed Maekar to him after his sons and wife die during the Great Spring Sickness and Baelor assumes the throne. It would be easier if they had spoken since the tournament at Ashford. It would be easier if Maekar had not been in love with him since they were boys.

Perhaps he will show Jon the mercy he denied his siblings, now that he has calmed down. “I thought it best not to tempt fate.” He grabs him by the forearm. “I can still take him to the North. Nobody has to know the truth. He won’t either. He will be no threat to you or your rule. I will make sure of that.”
Robert chuckles. “It was already too late for that the moment you crossed the city gates. Before nightfall, every beggar and whore will know the truth, or some twisted version of it.” He glances towards the cradle. “Jon. I don’t like this name. My son should have a proper Baratheon name, but since you took it upon yourself to name him as such, I have no choice but to accept that.”
Ned freezes. “Your son?”

Maekar Targaryen died old, died in battle, died as a King, and he for sure died full of regrets. Who must have lived a life with more regrets than him? He didn't know, he just knew that of all things he would forever regret the death of his beloved brother Baelor, more than 20 years past that Tourney in Ashford and he still hadn't forgot the sight of Baelor's lifeless body, if only things had been diferent, if only he could have lived in a world were he never swung that mace... Maekar should have been more careful of what he asked the Gods.
Bloodraven used to say that the Gods don't give anything for free, a life for a life, there was always an exchange. He dind't expect, however, that the Gods would send him back in time, to his childhood, but in a world were he indeed would never swung a mace, a world were Maekar Targaryen was born as Princess Maelle instead.
