Sebastian Sallow, like most, is chiefly concerned with the final. An adventurous bibliophile with a heart of brass and fire, he and his equally eccentric twin sister have adapted to the shifting landscape of their once-prosperous home: the blighted plots of land, dwindling mineral deposits, the inconvenience of magicless labour and travel, all exacerbating by the week. His adventures, therefore, are confined to his hometown, consisting namely of dodging the dubiously romantic advances of a stubborn narcissist and enduring the whispers of the gossiping folk.
But not all hope is lost. Should one day the elusive Enchantress show herself once more or the numerous lost envoys return from the castle, the wounds of the world may yet heal.
When his sister goes missing on her way to a fair out of town, Sebastian does not hesitate to give chase. Unbeknownst to him, a web of monsters and magic most foul and wondrous, fear and love most unexpected, and truths and lies most good and evil await him at his destination.
