She does not see his face.
All Alina knows of her Alpha is the sweep of her hair over her shoulder and a rough thumb dragging across a mating gland on the back of her neck that will not bear sensation for years to come. Not until she matures, until she is on the cusp of her first heat. A second death of adolescence that will follow her first.
All she knows of her Alpha is warm breath fanning the skin of her neck, followed by the puncture of an abrupt bite. Her whimper and the sob building in her throat are snuffed as a dangerous euphoria floods her; poison fed to prey. That which allows the predator to feed without resistance.
All she knows of her Alpha is a large hand squeezing her frail shoulder as she slumps back against the chair.
A whisper breathed against her ear.

Alina remembers her last normal day the same way one remembers a fever dream: flashes of sensation, colors she’s lost the words for, irritations that no amount to less than a trailing thought. She remembers a breakfast sandwich she’d give her eyeteeth for now, coffee rich even despite the burned beans her roommate complained of. Scratchy polyester blouse filched from a secondhand store, kitten heels barely holding on for dear life, clacking their way down the sidewalks as the cars honked and moved centimeters at a time, the street packed to the gills with taxis, Ubers, and bikes, the poor bastards trying to make it down the avenue in decent time.
Remembers seeing something flash over her phone’s screen, a warning, a siren blaring overhead—.
And then silence. Blessed, all-encompassing silence.
Now, Alina is considered one of the lucky ones for having survived at all, a pool small enough that only about twenty-five percent of the world’s population fit into it. Of that percentage, she’s less fortunate to have been saddled with the soft gland that popped just above where her collarbone met her neck.
