Nesta laughed, the sound soft and startled. “I don’t know. I like quiet. Mornings, when no one else is awake. Good coffee. Dancing. In my own living room, preferably. Thunderstorms—when I’m not caught in them.”
He nodded seriously. “You’re clearly a romantic.”
“I’m clearly an introvert.”
“Same thing, some days.”
She looked up at him again—really looked. His eyes were dark, but not unreadable. He was playful, sure, but there was something gentle under it. Something that felt like it could hold weight.
And somehow, she wanted to know more. All of it. Every strange, warm piece of him.

He wasn’t—he’d been more distant than ever. Coming to bed late, and leaving for the dining room before she even had the chance to wake up properly. It felt like their last conversation had been ages ago, before the girl fell onto Rhys’ lawn.
She remembered the night before it all happened. Their last night together: her hands held above her head, and him smiling and whispering words against her neck while he made love to her.
“You are the most precious thing in the world to me,” he’d said, under the bright moonlight.
She missed his steady presence, and the physical comfort he gave so easily.
She missed him.

“Water,” Nesta said quietly, certainly.
“Alright,” he shrugged. “So let’s go buy some matches.” She laughed once, sharp and sardonic. “I’m serious,” Cassian assured her. “Light me up baby, because I’m not going anywhere. I love you.”
It was the very first time he used those words as an answer and a weapon all in one. An explanation. It didn’t make any sense, his metaphor. You couldn’t light water on fire no matter how hard you tried. It would be years before Nesta reflected on just how quickly the answer came to mind when he asked who was who - how she knew from the start he would douse her flames.
But it didn’t matter if nothing made sense. The answer was simple and resolute. All her caution snapped, her tightrope came loose and Nesta was falling.
Falling, falling, falling.

Her mate had brushed it off with a laugh, but Nesta began to wonder if he was simply holding his tongue. If he, too, desired to stop taking contraceptives and try.
It took a long time, she’d been told. Years, even.
And still, she closed her eyes and saw those women. Saw her sister. And her body revolted.
They never discussed it. Never voiced aloud whether or not either of them agreed with their family’s teasing – whether the idea of a child had become too tempting to ignore. Other than her initial declaration, at the beginning of all of this, that she wanted to wait a long, long while, they never had the conversation.
Instead, Cassian was content to brush off the teasing remarks with a smile, as if it were nothing.
And Nesta was content to keep drinking her tonics like clockwork, as if were everything.
