The knife clicks against the cutting board a few times before she speaks again. Her eyes squint, “who taught you all of this?”
“Lexie--” exasperation floods his tone as he continues to chop the vegetables. Broccoli found its home on a baking sheet and slid into the oven while he started the potatoes boiling in a pot. “Derek had four sisters so, by proxy, I also had four sisters.”
“Oh, please,” she scoffed, unwrapping a peanut butter cup and popping it into her mouth. “You were doing all of this for Derek's sisters? This is boyfriend behavior. And you,” she steps forward and taps his chest with her finger, looking up at him with a teasing glint in her eyes. “you have never been the boyfriend type.”

One day, she’d hoped, they wouldn't have to live in the shadows, operating under the cover of night. There would come a time that it was more appropriate. That it was okay for them to be together. Right now, ethically, it was a nightmare and that didn’t even touch on the complicated relationship between her half sister and Mark’s best friend. It was easier to keep it all a secret. Quiet. Private. Their relationship was theirs to know and enjoy. They didn’t have to answer to anyone about anything. It was nice for now.
