“You’ll need to find the ability to tolerate it,” Caitlyn says quietly. “I love her. Somehow, she loves me. I won’t allow myself to lose her again.”
He sits down in the chair Vi vacated and takes Caitlyn’s hand in his. “I’ll do my best, sweetheart. It’s hard to look at her and not think about…”
He just trails off, but the way Caitlyn swallows means she understands.

Mel pauses for just a moment, but it’s long enough to make Vi’s stomach drop. “Caitlyn is alive. She’s in the hospital, and she’ll need time to recover, but she’s alive.”

They’re shoulder to shoulder, legs sprawled forward. Just hours earlier Vi had shrugged like she didn’t care if the Piltie tripped into a ditch, now they’re talking in whispers like they’ve got their own little secrets. Vi laughs- laughs- and he hears it even from all the way down here, because it’s a sound he hasn’t heard in years and it might just make him cry.
Hope. Dangerous. But so very warm. The blue gemstone buzzes in his pocket like a reminder.
If nothing else, Vi deserves the reprieve. If he’s gotta rely on a Topside enforcer to give it to her, then he’ll let his younger self’s jaw drop in disbelief, just a little.//

There was no Kaylee to help her prepare the night before classes were supposed to start, or to help her pick out her outfits for the first week. There was no best friend sleeping a foot away from her, accompanying her to and from the gross co-ed bathroom and helping her set up her (non-roommate-matching) bedspread.
Which was why Shelby was chugging jungle juice at a frat party on her first Friday night on campus in an attempt to soothe the butterflies in her stomach and forget about the rough first week in a new place. That, and Kaylee had asked her to meet her there while Nick came to visit this weekend.

Over time, a vast array of Emma clothes makes their way into Alyssa's closet; all sort of clothes, really. From the striped socks she has burrowed once for some reason, to shirts and t-shirts and sweaters and even a red knit hat that Emma had bought and only worn once before Alyssa claimed it.
And is not like Alyssa deliberately planned to keep stealing Emma’s clothes; it just sort of kept happening and she just went with it. Though was it really stealing if Emma was always gladly lending her clothes to Alyssa when she well knew that it was very likely that she would never get them back?
