He’s scared. Scared that everyone will catch the “I love you’s” he hides in every word, in every phrase pouring from his mouth. Will catch the look pooling in his eyes as he stares at him. Scared they’ll hear the “I love you” in the way he laughs, eyes crinkling with happiness that couldn’t be found from anything else than a soulmate. He’s scared that Mike will find out. Because the everyone makes their assumptions about him, freak, fag, queer, he’s heard them all. But assumptions he can deny, and slurs he can deal with. But if Mike notices, if Mike asks him about it, there’s no way to get out of it. Because every time Mike asks him something he spills his entire guts, without even meaning to. There’s something about Mike that just makes him want to pour out his soul, makes him want to confess everything. And that’s something he can never let happen.

“It’s May fifth,” Zuko tells him.
“Uh, okay. What about it?”
Zuko shrugs. “You wanted me to remind you when it was May fifth that it is May fifth, and you refused to tell me why.”
Sokka pauses. He does this, sometimes, asking Zuko to be a triple-insurance reminder of important things and dates, but this is an unusually cryptic reminder. Past Sokka knows, though, that Future Sokka is very forgetful, so he’d only be cryptic about something that Future Sokka would remember is extremely important, so important that if he forgot, it would be bad. Is this a batshit way to go about life? Probably, but at least the logic of the practice makes sense to Sokka’s brain.

The one year anniversary of their relationship is fast-approaching, and Sokka is woefully unprepared.

The Fire Lord needs a new hairdresser, a grueling process of vetting and testing and background checking. Sokka might know just the person, though--if only he can find her in the city. And if only he can figure out how to make sure Zuko likes her without revealing the whole, you know. Fire Lord thing.

Sokka takes Zuko on a date in the city that does not go at all how Zuko expects it to. (At least not at first)
