“If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?” Quickly, Ilya adds, “Don’t say that you want to know if you win the Cup.”

“Why not? What if that’s my answer?”

“Is so boring, Hollander. Of course you want to know this. But Ilya Rozanov and Boston Raiders exist in this world, so crystal ball says, so sad, but no.”

“Fuck off. What are these questions even for, anyway? Are you interviewing me for something? Wouldn’t you have to, like, tell me if you were?”

Ilya is quick to assure Hollander before his paranoia takes him right out of this phone call. “It is not for interview, Hollander. I am just wondering. Answer the question.”

“And I can’t say that I would want to know whether I win the Cup.”

    “Yes, other than that.”

“I guess… I guess I would want to know, like, am I happy?”

Ilya reads an article about 36 questions that are supposed to make people fall in love. He decides to ask them to Shane.

    Summary

"What would you say?" Shane asks, tightly, "If you were playing for Montreal."

"You want to practice chirping?" Ilya asks, a bit dubiously (and probably rightly so; he's heard enough of Shane's prepared statements over the years, has heard him read a teleprompter, has seen his stiff ads-)

"No. No," Shane is emphatic, "I just. Want an idea. Of what to expect."

Ilya takes a pull on his water bottle, eyes trained on Shane. He swallows, before replying, "You have played just as long as me. With dirtier team."

"Hey," Shane protests, laughing a little, but Ilya doesn't smile back.

Shane wants to be prepared for anything Montreal will throw at him on the ice.

"Rozanov told me to thank every goal tender I scored on," Shane says, wryly, to laughter, "So I will not be doing that.

"I do not take this for granted. Thank you to the rest of my line," there's a smattering of applause, a cheer from the Metros' table; he can't prove it, but he suspects it's Ilya booing. "I very literally could not have done this without you.

"I would like to thank my partner," he adds, shakily, "for their support." He glances up, not towards Ottawa's table. "Thank you for always pushing me to do better." There's some scattered applause, perfunctory.

This is the bail out point. He can lift the trophy with one more "thank you", a "hopefully see you again next year", or he can-

Ilya Rozanov has a lot of feelings about (and for) Shane Hollander, but he cannot tell anyone for obvious reasons. He then discovers Hockey RPF on Ao3. Okay, maybe there is one place where he can share how he feels.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I don't usually read stories where the guys participate in fandom, and this one requires suspension of disbelief the way they all do. But this story is grounded within the world it builds, and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

    Summary

The camera is zooming slowly in on Shane, sitting on a bench in a locker room with his gear most of the way on, starting to lace up his skates. There’s a steaming hot coffee in a paper cup and a donut set neatly on a napkin on the bench beside him. Text appears in the space above the items and proclaims: Extra fuel, for when it’s time to cream Boston.

Dunkin’ Donuts puts Ilya in an ad campaign. Tim Hortons responds in kind. After years of on-ice rivalry, this might actually be the thing that causes the hottest point of contention.
