Summary
“You don't listen, Gem!” Her first mate shouts, long brown hair whipping around her face. The captain has told her over a dozen times she should pull it back, but the first mate rarely listens. “You jump in headfirst without coming up with a plan, and it explodes in your face! Every time, Gem! And yet you keep doing it, as if it’s the first! You never think things through!”
The first mate looks angry. Furious, even. It takes a lot to get the first mate riled up. Normally, she’s the hotheaded one, always quick to act on emotion, while her second in command is calm, cool, and collected. Easily flustered, maybe, but not easily angered. It’s almost as though they’ve switched roles.
How strange, the captain thinks to herself.

Summary
The shadows were restless. That meant they were whispering, which meant they were actively getting louder, which meant that Scar’s thoughts had been replaced with the incoherent chatter going on around him.
“Would you shut up?” He snapped at the air. “I’m trying to think.”
He didn’t know how many were in there with him. He didn’t want to look. They tended to wander as they pleased around the first floor, whether or not he was in the room—though something kept them from going up the stairs.
Which was completely fine with Scar. It meant he could at least fall asleep in peace, even if he did always wake up screaming.
Or, Scar hasn’t left his house in a while, on account of the constant nightmares, relentless pain, and overwhelming exhaustion. The shadows haunting him aren’t much help, either.

“Your husband is a fool?” Pearl asks.
The gravedigger shrugs. “Well, he married me, so there must be something wrong with him.”

Gabe hated the kitchen floor at the best of times.
It was cold tile, hard, and the grout pattern always dug into his skin.
But the kitchen was the only room in the house right now, at half past two in the morning, where he could turn on the light without waking anyone up. Where the kitchen island was close enough that he could brace against something if the room started tilting again once he eventually stood. It was also the only place far enough from everyone’s bedrooms that he could sit and shake through a pain spike without, again, waking anyone.
At least, that was the plan.

She didn’t think Gabe would be in his room, despite looking for him there first. He’d had a doctor’s appointment earlier in the day, and they always seemed to set him off slightly (despite them happening at least once every other month). It tended to shift his mood into something negative, avoiding everyone, until he bounced back.
Natalie hadn’t seen him crying after one since they were both in elementary school.

Summary
He pressed himself further back into the corner, a snarl coming to his lips. The eye creatures never reacted to his shouting, but they did hesitate when he growled. But when the lanky aliens came around the corner, they didn't so much as look at him. Instead, they were focused on what looked like a stretcher, the kind that ambulances used back on Earth.
Sitting atop it, perfectly still, was another human.
Scar felt his heart stop in his chest. It was impossible. There was no way there was another human on the ship. It had to be a trick of some kind, a robot made to look human, or a statue, or something. This was some sort of experiment, a test to see how he would react to seeing something that looked like his own species.
But they looked so lifelike.

As the only two humans outside of the solar system, they have only each other to rely on. Alone, it was impossible to escape. But with Grian by his side, maybe, just maybe, they have a chance.

Fortunately, Gabe is not above guilt tripping. He was going to get something good out of this. He never really had friends. Acquaintances, sure. But nobody who ever really stuck around. Nobody who wanted to be friends with the kid who disappeared to the hospital for weeks on end. Natalie knows this. Gabe is a loser through and through. He doesn't mind sounding absolutely and completely fucking pathetic. He pulls out the big wet puppy eyes. "Natalie, please." Gabe begs, "I don't have anyone else to talk to."
