“Bet on what?” he asks suspiciously, not unlike how one pokes a sleeping tiger.
“Bet that you can plan better dates,” Phainon says. “That you’re a better lover.”
Mydei scoffs.
“Against that male alpha? Any decent human being would win.”
Phainon pauses, an idea forming in his head. And it’s such a bad idea. Such a stupid idea. But, it could be fun. And Mydei has always indulged his stupid ideas.
“What about against me?” he asks.
(Phainon and Mydei have always been known for their competitions. It's the basis of their almost four year friendship. There's no reason they can't also compete over who's the better date either.)

Kaveh expects some offhandedly smug, smooth remark from Alhaitham about how Kaveh’s his senior but never acts like it, or how it was the most logical outcome given the circumstances and he’s being a child for debating with him about it. But he just mumbles, low and almost petulant, “It is what it is.” He won’t meet Kaveh’s eyes. “You can’t move out.”
Kaveh balks at him before rubbing at his face furiously. “You can’t be serious. You can’t be serious,” he laughs, almost delirious. There’s no way his luck has reached this new low. He knows the ascended heroes on Celestia are guffawing at his misfortune. “Why would you do that when you’ve always wanted me to leave anyway?”
Alhaitham stares at him for a long moment before sighing, slipping into his seat and sliding his plate of Kaveh’s carefully constructed Fatteh towards him primly. “Why indeed,” he drones, sounding exhausted. “Why indeed.”

In which Alhaitham’s grandmother thinks they’re a couple and, well. They play along.
Alhaitham was a good actor. No, that was an understatement: Alhaitham was an impressively skilled actor. He was utterly unfazed throughout the exchange, — even while discussing honeymoon plans — a languid arm thrown around Kaveh’s waist, rubbing absentminded circles onto his skin as if he were perfectly at ease pretending that Kaveh really was his lover, his safe space, his joy and comfort.
And it was… oddly soothing. A firm, grounding grip on his body, a compliment here and there, a demonstration of care and attention in between comments about Inazuman tourist attractions. It felt natural, even, organic, as if Alhaitham weren’t acting at all. And that was the worst part. The last thing Kaveh needed was to fall in love with his roommate (who he also considered to be his best friend, although he’d never admit that out loud).

Summary
Kaeya hates birthdays. Every year for the past 5 years, he escapes from Mondstadt before dawn and disappears, a bag of strong wine to accompany him. He hasn't enjoyed birthdays since his time at the Ragnvindr family, and he'll be damned if he lets anyone waste their precious time on him. He'd rather be alone- well, not alone, but the only man he wants to celebrate with would certainly not be joining him.
Diluc waits for Kaeya at the tavern, hoping that he will come in for a birthday drink. He doesn't know that Kaeya hasn't celebrated a single birthday in Mondstadt since their fight, and is shocked to hear from Jean that Kaeya always disappears with a bag of wine and...a single bottle of grape juice. He never returns until the following morning.
Adelinde's cake, which he has promised to deliver to Kaeya, awaits in the fridge. He is determined to deliver it, having failed the previous year, and he sets off to the place where the two of them used to sneak off to during their childhood. Diluc tells himself that he's just going to deliver the cake and wish him a happy birthday. That's it.
But as these things go, he finds himself in a much more precarious situation.

Summary
Kaeya has only ever wanted to bring Diluc happiness, but it seems even that was too much to hope for.
At least Kaeya can feel relief at the fact they’ve chosen him to be the physical object of their revenge, and not Diluc himself. If he focuses on that, then he can imagine that he’s helping him, in some horrible, twisted way. He’s taking the pain that was meant for Diluc, and if he remembers that, well…maybe he can deal with this.
A needle is pressed into his neck and there is a burning sensation as the unknown substance is pushed into his veins.
“You’re going to enjoy this, pretty boy,” the man holding him purrs. “You won’t have a choice.”

I was just wondering if you would be around to help me with a task I have been meaning to carry out for a while now that has suddenly become essential to your continued presence in my home. Any wild guesses as to what it might be?” Nervousness gets the better of him and Kaveh squirms and laughs. Al Haitham narrows his eyes at him, clearly finding the situation unfunny.
“Well, I uh—”

Sighing, he lets go of his envy, welcoming the exhaustion. It would be so easy to just not care, to not think more of their arrangement than what it was, like Alhaitham clearly did. He wasn't losing sleep over it, and Kaveh definitely did not feel disappointed by the fact (the telltale itch of his eyes, the hollow at his chest, betrayed him just like his heart did).
