the voice made him stop in his tracks from where he was walking a few paces behind izuku on their weekly walks at the park.

only izuku called him ‘papa’ and his six year old was having the time of his life splashing in puddles up ahead of him. shouta knew this. still, he turned around to once again, only to be met by an empty pathway.

had he misheard? but someone needed to actually be there for him to hear anything in the first place- and he knew he heard something. he was sure of it this time.

yet, once again, he was met with emptiness, no one there.

an unsettling thought whispered in his head that this was courting behaviour.

shouta physically batted away the thought and sighed. this was… an unexpected development. he did not want to have to call the kid out to explain inappropriate crushes. however, the evergreen scent in the air was nothing but platonic, more akin to a puppy in the presence of its dam rather than anything close to romantic.

he sighed again. he couldn’t tell what was running through the kid’s head when it came to his problem puppy.

"midoriya?" shouta questioned, growing even more confused and worried when the boy stiffened at the sound of his own name. horrified green eyes snapped up to meet his gaze, filled with emotion shouta didn’t understand.
"w-what?" the boy breathed out, voice almost inaudible had shouta not been listening. "dad?"

hizashi’s gaze softened at the sight of shouta cooking dinner with a familiar cargo attached to his back. upon closer inspection, he sees izuku clinging onto his dad’s back like a baby koala, a few loops of shouta’s capture weapon acting as a sort of sling to support the boy while the man worked.

hizashi peered around shouta’s shoulder like a curious uncle. the sight that meets him had his heart melting a little. izuku’s chubby cheek was smooshed against his dad’s shoulder, dried tear tracks still visible as the boy dozed lightly, hands loosely fisting in shouta’s jumpsuit.

“if he wakes up and starts crying again, i’m stabbing you in the spleen.”

Eventually light enters the world, too, and that smell brings with it blurry shapes. There is no colour here yet, just lights and darks, but soon after there is a voice, and with the voice a massive, soft hand.

“Izuku, Izuku, I’m here.” The voice is rumbly and soft, full of love. Izuku yearns to turn towards it but he's too warm, too tired. He tries to respond but he is too weak to speak, managing only to make an odd gurgling sigh.

Through the fog, too far away for him to make out, he thinks he can sense a smile.

It’s only when his ears strengthen enough to notice other sounds that Izuku finally realises that he is dead.

Katsuki tightens his grip on the windowsill while he lurks in the dark outside his omega’s dining room. He scowls at the unopened gifts that sit on the table, disappointed that his courting is being ignored. Her tears have him ready to kick the door down just to get to her and comfort her. His baby girl shouldn’t be sad on her fucking birthday. He’d even been good today and didn’t start a fight with the heroes, despite his raging need to see her, just so that she could have a nice relaxing day. He knows she enjoys their fights, has even seen her smirk a time or two when he’s flirted or she’s managed to land a hit on him. Maybe he should have caused a ruckus today… anything to make those damn tears stop.

OR... Ochako is sad on her birthday, but Katsuki has just the means to make her birthday wish come true.
