Faulkner looks over the half-completed Withermark, and back to Carpenter. He thinks back to his call with Eddie and his call with Mason. You’re only a martyr if somebody knows why you’re gone, a small, truthful voice inside of him says. And if you die tonight, nobody would know or care.
Carpenter cared, at least, enough to come back for him. Even if it had been with half a mind to kill him. That had to count for something. “Okay, then,” he says.or: five times Carpenter protects Faulkner and one time it's the other way around

Summary
Faulkner knows scarcity like the back of his hand. He also knows denial, the feeling of being a martyr for something greater and more terrifying than he will ever be. So if he skips a few meals here and there? Well. It's not entirely surprising.
(Alternate description: From the way Faulkner, his upbringing, and his eating habits are described in the podcast, I am completely convinced that this boy at least screens for some sort of disordered eating. So of course, I wrote a fic about it.)

Takes place post-finale. In which not even drowning can free him from the river: Faulkner wakes up after his death, upon a small wooden boat, borne by the currents.

Summary
Summer has been and gone, and school started up once again. Eddie served my father and I dinner in the kitchen. I had seen Eddie's dissatisfaction growing over the months. He clearly didn't want to be stuck in this role, pseudo-parenting me forever. For once, I didn't accept my father's absence. It angered me to be sat opposite him while he looked right through me. He might as well have not been there at all, this shell of a man. There, for a moment, I despised him for his weakness.
Faulkner and his father have a difficult relationship. What was it like for Richard, Eddie and their father living together in that house in the aftermath of Charlie's death? How do we end up with the fraught situation in Chapter 38? And was it always destined to end this way?

Sometimes when Sibling Rane looks at him, they can’t even see the face of their Prophet anymore. Sometimes they think that he is dead, drowned at the bottom of that cursed water butt, and whoever they brought to the surface is nothing more than his empty decaying shell.
“It’s all going to be much better once we reach the Grand Aquifer.” Sibling Rane doesn’t know who they are even trying to reassure at this point: their Prophet or themself.
It doesn’t work either way.

Didn't even ask for gas money. I am letting her link our elbows, as I have let her touch me all day today. I am pretending not to notice when she makes us stray off the path only to return to it moments later. I am not asking her what it is that she doesn't want me to see.
And still in the back of my mind I am wondering if there really is a sick old woman at the end of this road. It's the only reason I am still humoring this person, the off-chance that she is telling the truth, even when all signs point otherwise."

Coco was close, so close that the possibility of failing at this point clouded her judgment regarding her next moves.
She reached out as far as she could, applying more pressure with her torso and knees, which served as support.
Heat radiated from Riche’s skin, and the mere sensation emboldened Coco enough to reach for her quickly and pull her as if her life depended on it. Riche was pulled away, sliding to a safer spot than Coco’s current position by sheer momentum.
When she looked back, three pairs of stunned eyes watched her in silence. Their expressions hovered in a limbo between anxiety and fear, unsure of how to react to what they had just witnessed.
Still, Coco… She had done it! She had saved her friend from danger! She can finally do something! She—!
“COCO!”The ice finally gave way beneath her feet.
[Or, the girls go to practice magic and an accident happens. Qifrey isn't taking it very well, and neither is Olruggio.]
