If We Happy Few had an after party it would be a bit more melancholy than this. Luckily for us, I like happy endings.

    Summary

“I thought you weren’t at all upset about any of this?”

    “I’m not,” Al-Haitham insists. Stubborn.

“Well, what happened then? Surely something’s bothering you, or else you wouldn’t be moving your things back and forth in the same spot like that.”

Al-Haitham’s eyes drop to his hands, between them a box filled with little trinkets—souvenirs from his trips to the desert, no doubt, gleaming gem stones and jagged blocks of stone, the old runes on them barely legible from erosion. Al-Haitham sighs.

“Nothing happened,” he begins, slow and measured, “I’m just looking for something.”

The morning after their return to Sumeru City, Al-Haitham’s cover of nonchalance is blown for good.

    Summary

Though Alhaitham’s instinctive reaction was to push this inexplicably older version of Kaveh away and demand an explanation, something about the desperation in his grip held him hostage. He could feel the rapid rise and fall of Kaveh’s chest against his own, the quivers in his body from the leftover adrenaline of travelling through what had to be some sort of time portal.

He was still trying to make sense of the situation, pulse roaring in his ears, when Kaveh’s fingers began to shift, sliding down the length of his arm until he reached Alhaitham’s left hand.

Kaveh traced along the veins there, pausing - as if searching for something that wasn’t where it should be. Then his posture fell, softening with melancholy. “Oh,” he murmured, almost to himself. “I’m not back yet.”

    Alhaitham stiffened. “What?”

“You’re not my Alhaitham,” Kaveh said with a quiet, somber sigh that wavered faintly at the end.

    Summary

"Sir Varka," how Flins can say a simple name with such melancholy, Varka will never understand. "Could I trouble you to return my lantern to the Cemetery? It's easier than having to carry me."
Flins lifts his lantern. The flames inside are dulled slightly, but the sight is so familiar it manages to put Varka at ease. He finds himself reaching for it without really meaning to.
Then, as Varka's fingers wrap around the metal casing, Flins simply… dissolves.

    Summary

It's the day of the Sabzeruz festival and all of Sumeru City is celebrating. All but Al-Haitham. He finds himself at the Akademiya working before a series of events lead to him feeling hard of breath and even harder of control. Luckily, Kaveh is there to calm him down.

Or: Al-Haitham has a sensory overload and his headphones stop working, so Kaveh helps him through it.
