Then Jim registers the contact properly, and his brain immediately runs on overdrive trying to pick apart the whole situation. He brings it to a halt. Spock does that, now. He touches Jim just as casually as Jim does the inverse. It is a fact of his company. He touches Jim—sometimes fleetingly, sometimes with purpose—on his arms, his hands, occasionally his neck. He has set a broad hand on the small of Jim’s back as they walked in an empty wing of the Academy, before. It’s not a change Jim ever expected of their relationship, but it is—likely because of that—one he treasures.

Summary
After a life-saving mind meld with Spock, Captain Kirk begins to experience vivid dreams of ancient Vulcan, a time of warring clans and primal bonds.
In these dreams, a prince bearing Spock's likeness claims they are destined mates, leaving Kirk haunted by how real everything feels.
When Kirk shares this with Spock, he is told that Vulcans do not dream, deepening the mystery. Unbeknownst to Spock, Kirk is connecting with a remnant of his subconscious left behind from the meld.
As the dreams grow more intense, Kirk finds himself grappling with his own emotions, toward both his trusted first officer and the mysterious Vulcan prince in his dreams.

Summary
Despite his limited sample size, Jim feels very sure that this is some sort of universal constant. That anywhere there’s a Jim Kirk and a Spock with even half a chance of meeting, they’ll start to orbit each other like binary stars. Maybe the universe didn’t know what to do with four of them in one place, then, and that’s what lead to all this, because it feels so right, when Jim is sure if it were anyone but these two he’d feel strange, opening his relationship back up after years of calling swinging a “young man’s game”, and stranger still sleeping with someone so much younger than himself. But it is himself, and it’s Spock, and it feels right.
