Mira laughs again, the sound humorless but amused all the same.

Zoey says nothing, and Mira does the same. They look out the window to find the moon, and fall asleep aching.

Amity lets out a squeal and finally releases her hair only to press her hands back into her cheeks. She’s staring ahead with a dopey grin, eyes spinning with stars. “Luz and I are dating,” she whispers, like it’s something reverent.
The twins take half a second to process the information before they chorus a delighted gasp. They move as a unit, swooping their baby sister up and squeezing her between themselves in a vice-like grip.

Luz makes a surprised chirping noise in the back of her throat and pauses her scribbling to gently touch the inside of Amity’s elbow. 'Sorry if I startled you,' it says, and then she’s back hurriedly scratching on her own paper, tongue sticking out slightly.
It’s the first of their shared gestures that act as a stand in for absent communication, though neither of them note its significance at the time.
Amity huffs in amusement and angles her notebook so it’s easier for the other girl to read.
