"Like it?" She asked, spinning for effect. The golden light of the lamp caught on the hundreds of tiny stones on her dress and for a moment, she shone like the sun.
Theo watched, stunned, as she turned back to face him, a tentative smile tugging her rosy cheeks up. He tried to remember how to speak, how to make his hands move to tell her yes, he liked it. Yes, it was perfect and he never wanted her to stop spinning, to never stop shining."

If she were being honest with herself, maybe it was more that Mabel wouldn’t say why she asked Theo. She wouldn’t say she enjoyed their day on Coney Island or had a desire to see another genuine smile on his lips. She wouldn’t say that she wanted to be the reason for Theo’s smile. She wouldn’t say she’d been learning ASL on YouTube and practice apps in her free time.
It’s a good thing Mabel wasn’t used to being totally honest.
Mabel invites Theo to her first art gallery showing. Theo helps Mabel have actual fun at it.

She could have pretended to have accidentally sent him a text she meant for someone else. She could have reminded him that the things she’d confessed on Coney Island, what little he may have gleaned, was not for public consumption and if he leaked it to anyone, he’d be wishing he were back in the safety of jail. She didn't write any of them.

Summary
There’s a distinct smell of mold wafting down the hallway. It’s so different from the hardwood floor polish-scented, dusty-curtain-air that fills the Arconian. Mabel Misses that smell. She misses her aunt’s apartment, she Misses being able to see her old man friends on a moment’s notice. She misses the Diner around the corner, the walk to the Subway station. She even misses Uma’s foul mood whenever they run into each other. And the stupid sound of the elevator ding.
This house has no elevator ding. The cabin just softly jostles to a halt and spits you out into the nondescript corridor where everything looks the same and smells vaguely moldy. But all things considered, it’s not a terrible place. And she’s not half-mad to be here, either. It’s different, sure, but it’s… nice. Actually, the feeling even this sad corridor evokes in her this instant feels a lot like the Arconian does. It feels like home. Mabel knows, however, it’s not this building which gives her that feeling. It's something else.
