“No,” She says, her voice coming out too soft. She clears her throat again, tries again. “No, it’s fine. I’m sorry. It’s been a bad week but I–that’s not your fault. I’m sorry.”
Mom never says sorry, she thinks, trying to convince herself that they’re not the same.
“It’s okay.” Pete says, smiling softly at her. It’s not. They both know it’s not. Christ, how nice is this guy? “Here.”
