A small burst of satisfaction blooms in Hongjoong’s chest as he looks down at his scribbled notes of arrows, x’s, and names — the same bubbling, pleased feeling he always gets when he finally solves a puzzle or wins a prize — but it immediately bursts as the realization hits him that this is the shittiest prize ever.

His sight blurred, all Feng Xin could feel was the overbearing heat pressing down on him and the sharp sting in his mouth. In a moment of pure senselessness, Feng Xin dropped his temple down to rest on Mu Qing’s now-bared neck.
The hot flush of Mu Qing’s skin against his own felt like sweet indoctrination, like ideas that would make a madman spiral were being fed to him through the simple touch of their skin.
It was disgusting, the way their sweat mixed under the blazing sun, the way Feng Xin would believe anything he was told while laying there, he hated it. Feng Xin willed everything in him to move—the longer he rested against Mu Qing the higher he got of the thought of staying—yet every cell in his body resisted his trembling will.
Mu Qing shifted beneath him, he hadn’t even realised how still Mu Qing had been after he dropped. Apparently Mu Qing was stunned speechless, every insult that had been spewing from his lips fell from his throat and never made it to his ears.
Or: Feng Xin finds himself stuck in the endless void that is having feelings for Mu Qing, the person who ripped apart their young lives and gained Heavenly favour for it.

Mu Qing is dying.
Two years after he almost lost life, limb, and pride at Mount Tonglu, the god of the Southwest is standing face-to-face with his own mortality yet again. But this time, not even the people he cares for can save him from a sick core. He has one year (maybe) and a god's worth of loose ends to tie before the end.
The problem is Feng Xin, who has chosen now, of all the centuries available to him, to finally look back.
Mu Qing has spent eight hundred years making peace with wanting what he couldn't have. He'd gotten very, very good at it. He is considerably less good at it with 12 months left on the clock and Feng Xin's eyes on him like he's something worth keeping.
