    Summary

“You must want to go home,” Mona says softly. “The land of the dead is no place for a god of living things.”

“I did not come here as a god,” he says slowly, trying to find the words to describe his feelings. It's an impossible task, trying to use something as clumsy as words to describe something as delicate as gossamer spiderwebs stretched between two branches, but he has no other choice.

“I came here as someone who is already dead.”

It’s over. Columbina has been reunited with her Authority, Arlecchino is taking Sandrone home to Fontaine, the Doctor has been defeated (for now) and Wanderer and Durin are bound for Sumeru to rest and deliver the news to Nahida.

    Something… lingers.

As it turns out, puppets don’t like being separated from their cores. Not even when the fate of the world is on the line.

Following the war in Nod-Krai—because nothing is ever really over—Wanderer develops a chronic illness.

    Bookmarker's Notes

oh my god this is so sad

i really hope the theory doesn't actually happen where nahida has to choose between hat guy and sumeru

her whole speech is so sad too

also romantic tension between wanderer and sethos, durin is disturbed

“This kind of irony suits me,” he says. “Don’t you think? Five hundred years of getting thrown around, and the one thing that damages this body is when I try to protect what actually matters to me.”
Nahida says nothing. Her silence is as enraging as it is steadying; if she spoke, it would break him. She knows this.
A while later, with Nahida’s presence unmoving behind him, Wanderer takes a controlled breath.
“If Dottore gets what he wants,” says Wanderer, “he will return to Sumeru, stronger than all of the Seven combined, and burn Irminsul to its roots. I trust you’ll know what to do if that happens.”
“You’d have me dismantle you,” says Nahida, “and plant your core into the charred remains of Irminsul so the Ley Lines may continue to give life to this world.”
He hates the word dismantle, but she’s right. She’s right.
“I was wondering if that’s where your mind had gone,” says Nahida. “If it comes down to it, I will choose Sumeru over you. You know this. But I hope, in that case, you would first allow me to look for every other alternative and every possible timeline. If there's any way to save both you and this world, I won’t take the easy way out.”
Wanderer chuckles, but there's no humor behind it. “You’d force me to live a hero’s life but deny me a hero’s death. You really are cruel.”
“I won’t deny you a hero’s death,” says Nahida, sitting beside him. “Just a meaningless one.”

Nahida makes a frame with her fingers and lifts her eyes toward the peak of the farthest mountain. “There. I think that’s a good spot. Quiet, secluded; in spring, white blossoms fill the nooks between the stones all throughout that peak.”
    “What are you talking about?”
“If your core was to be planted in Irminsul’s place,” says Nahida, “then that is where I would bury your body.”
    Wanderer’s chest hitches.
“No one really goes up there,” says Nahida. “You would be remembered with a quiet silence, firm as the foundations of this world.”
“I wasn’t born here,” says Wanderer. “My nation is Inazuma.”
“But Sumeru is your home,” says Nahida. “And even if it wasn’t, selfishly, I would want you here with me, where I could watch over you until even Time dissolved to dust. I would sit on the peak with you and watch the flowers and listen to the sounds of the rivers and the birds. And I would think of all the awful things you’d say about nature’s purest delights, and I would laugh. I would remember you as you were, for everything that you were. You would be able to rest. And, yes, it would be a hero’s rest, befitting a hero’s life and a hero’s death. And still, it would be my last resort—” Her hand shifts, reaching to touch her chest over where a heart would be, “—as your god, but more importantly as your friend.”

aino and jahoda eat sweets made by wanderer

i cannot wait for wanderer to start rage baiting his former collegues, let hat guy start beating dottore up in the next vers

but in general, this has been making me think about the intricacies of wanderer being forgotten, like he's free from everything, but it's also bad bc he has no ties and shit

i'll give a better summary of the fic later but it's absolute cinema

i love kazuscara and the way their dynamic and relationship is explored here is top tier

damn not kuni's punishment... regression (kinda, like going from humanity to heartless again)

VAL THE GOAT (bro keeps burning his aprons)

ohmygod yuxi and the granny with the mingxiao lanterns

why is my guy kazu so well versed with like everything, bro can make potions, poisons, perfume, art, poetry, bladework, i forgor what else but it probably exists

    cotton candy scene on top

they never got to fly the lanterns together :(
    or did they??

oh also scara ingests poisons in order to

oh my god pierro and arlecchino's descriptions caught me off guard it was so funny, i kept thinking of pierro like mitsuri from KnY and arle like the "as long as it's not like blue or pink" dyed hair meme

also the title of the fic appears exactly twice in the fic and its honestly kinda absolute cinema

    Bookmarker's Notes

This is so fucking good what do I do with my life now that’s it’s over Jesus
The conflict is so interesting also ch1 only builds up the whole incident so there isn’t any amnesia shouto postehaste but it’s crazy good the build up, I can go sleep soundly now after crying my eyes out

Bro it’s so sad when both of them are like I miss you but they hurt each other too much to healthily together
(the foreshadowing crazy too, todo wished to [wipe my brain clean] and baku wanted a [hard reset], they both got it)

also the fucking boot imprint on the [dark pine] door, absolute symbolism

    snippets:
He stops himself before he can finish. Katsuki imagines the unspoken admissions drifting away, thinning out as they rise until they disappear altogether. He thinks of all the other abandoned sentences. Where do they go? There must be a place where they say everything and leave nothing behind.

[“I hate you,” Shouto says, and he means it.
Katsuki deserves that. You’re more like your old man than you think you are deserves eons more than hatred, more than just a slap in the face.]
“No you don’t,” Katsuki says because he needs it to be true, “You wish you did.” Spite tastes bitter in his mouth but he spews it anyway, “It’s not that easy, princess.”

Katsuki had only ever wanted one thing: to give Shouto the softest parts of himself, to prove that his tenderness was not weakness. Now, in the wake of pleas for contrived violence, Katsuki realizes: Shouto had never wanted anything but the promise of a constant ache, to be devastated wholly and completely through masochistic catharsis.

“Maybe later,” he murmurs so softly he wonders if Kirishima even heard him. Half of him hopes he hasn’t. “Someday…” When it doesn’t hurt so fucking much. “…when this is all over. Ask me again.”
Kirishima turns on his side to face him. “When will that be?”
In the back of his mind, he knows it’ll never come. Right now it feels never-ending, doomed and perpetually heart-wrenching. Over means nothing, because it was always meant to be Shouto and it always will be Shouto. It will never end, not truly.
    “Wish I knew.”

The shade of him is pained, doused in regret, and a plume of understanding paralyzes Katsuki. His vision blurs when the thought strikes him again, glaringly so.
He does. He does love him. Too much, too achingly.
Forward footfalls guide him. Katsuki doesn’t need to look back to know that the door is still dark and dented pine, and that this hurts Shouto just as much as it hurts him.
It was never meant to last, he knows. That doesn’t make it any easier.

There should be thick despondency, a tear of disquiet at his seams, but he just feels empty more than anything else. His routine is mechanical, fueled by autonomy rather than will. He wakes up to orange slits of light beaming through blinds, and he does not think of how the same color once wrapped Shouto up in warmth and gentleness. [...] he does not, he does not, he does not, except he does, and of all the blood and carnage he’s faced in his lifetime, this terrible longing is the most gruesome.
To know that he is forgetting Shouto, and will forget him in time, is too burdensome. The bigger part of him won’t let go, still holds on too tightly. Like a child, he clutches the last fragments of memory until they, too, slip away.

“[Zuko] misses you,” Shouto replies with too much nonchalance, like he’s acknowledging the weather. And what freezes Katsuki in his tracks, stills the blood in his veins, is what comes next: “Sometimes I do, too.”

Everything is pristine, too white and sterile and pure from floor to ceiling. And there sits Shouto, solemn and colored in sun by the window. He’s outlined in the same shade of gold that reminds Katsuki of mountaintops and burdens being lifted, gaze more inquisitive and naive than it’s ever been. This can’t be the Shouto he knew. He’s been reinvented somehow, a completely blank slate. Underneath it all, Katsuki feels a certain ache that never went away.

    Boyfriend.
The word is not only childish, but foreign. It’s not something they’d ever called each other in their entire time together, which is precisely what worries Katsuki the most— that somehow in the temporary void of Shouto’s mind, this one lone fact has been retained, not even a fact at all but an illusion. By all intents and purposes, he should not know this, he should not know him, yet by some miracle, he does.
It would be cruel to deny him of this when it’s the only thing he knows. Renouncing this one false certainty risks too much confusion he’s not sure Shouto can handle at the moment. On the other hand, lying to someone in such a fragile state of mind can only end in disaster. But damn it all, he’s selfish, and he wants to know why. Why does he remember him above all else? And why did he forget their time apart?

Besides, nothing would make it acceptable to treat him in a way that would leave him like this.

Shouto hasn't felt this kind of (unreasonable?) rage for a long time. Just. Come on. After Bakugou chose you. You’d have to be more than pathetic, cruel or clueless to dump him. Since there's one thing Shouto knows, it's that Bakugou would give everything to someone that he was with.

It makes no sense. It's bullshit.

    Bookmarker's Notes

this is so fucking good i can't believe i haven't read it sooner, this is one of the best fics i've ever read bruv what

i really love the characterization of baku and mido's relationship here because it stems from their inability to understand each other, and it breaks my heart to see inko realizing in ch 27 more clearly what is happening in the bakugou household
i also find it super interesting in the dynamic where they hate each other because it makes a lot of sense, but the way they're attached anyway, and also the fight at ground beta doesn't happen so things build up

bakusquad is so adorable here... except for that one time that denki said that bakugou lacks humanity but yea
sero's relationship with bakugou is so cute here, like they also buddies
mina is so cute too, she just wants bakuhugs
kiri is trying so hard, bro is just a really good friend

detective guy and aizawa are also the GOATs bro, their sections are so interesting to read, AND AND THE BEST JEANIST AND ORCA GUY
oh my god i love the todoroki interactions, my man you are so close

I love how all of characters have a little piece of what's happening to bakugou but not everyone, so the build up of the grand fuckery of what he's been experiencing since the sports festival and the abusive treatment he's gone thru...
bakugou just can't rely on anyone, because everyone wants him to change but as the audience we can tell how everyone misses and is concerned for how he's acting, so silent that he might as well disappear.

HSPC's connection to this is also fucked, ofc they're here

I would usually add snippets but I literally crying the entire time everything is just too good, especially check out interactions and POV w/ aizawa, masaru, tsunagu, mina, sero, orca guy (oh my god i forgot his name), OH SHIT ALSO CHECK OUT THE RANDOM GUY W THE GRANDDAUGHTER even tho it was brief it was so worth looking into

If this fic updates again, I'm looking forward to everyone's reaction to bakugou's life bro that shit is craz

“You’re trying to convince them that you’re gay, right?” Todoroki murmurs, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “What better way than to get a boyfriend?” He nods meaningfully toward their clasped hands.

I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything, Katsuki wants to shout. I am gay.

What comes out instead is: “They’re gonna think you’re gay too, moron.”

Todoroki just smiles at him—this soft, infuriating curve of his mouth that makes Katsuki want to knock his perfect teeth out.

oh my god oh my god

this todo is giving vibes that he's using the fact that bakugou told everyone is gay in order to just hang out w him one on one (gayly) which i find kind of hilarious (i mean he keeps saying you need a fake bf if you need people to believe you're gay, so he's not accepting nor denying if bakugou is gay)

also oh my god bakugou and denki are buddies, they're friends :DDD
i like how gayness is portrayed here, it's just normal and a part of who they are, no need to grossly change their view of them, they were gay before and after they came out

i feel like there's no dialouge between bktd but there is so much tension and subtext it's funny, todo says two words and bakugou is hella overthinking (maybe just thinking actually)

i'm waiting for the classmate's reaction to them holding hands, so cutesy so demure

let's hope that todo is actually gay and loves bakugou the man, or ig you could add extra angst by rejecting bakugou's actual advances and then realizing that he loves him or smth

Bakugou doesn't give the slightest shit about anyone's personal drama, least of all Todoroki's. Or he didn't, anyway, right up until a seriously injured Todoroki collapses outside Bakugou's dorm-room door one night. That kind of thing is just -- hard to ignore. So now it's a mission: find out who the hell messed with Todoroki, and put a foot up their ass. Which would be a shitload easier if Todoroki would stop lying, but hey, Bakugou is always up for a challenge.

Bro this is kind of a masterpiece, todo trips down the stairs and bakugou is traumatized, KENDRICKKK DROP ANOTHER DISS TRACK (chapter) AND MY LIFE, IS YOURS
natsuo and bakugou looking at each other: tis asshole

“Hey,” Katsuki says. Then he’s not sure what to follow up with. You’re a moron is a classic, not to mention extremely fucking true, but somehow Katsuki feels like maybe he should wait until half-n-half’s actually with it enough to understand him before he explains to him exactly what kind of idiot he is. “You fucked up your lung,” he says instead, then, because fuck it, “That was pretty fucking stupid.”

Katsuki shoves open Deku’s dorm-room door around midnight. Deku’s asleep – everyone’s asleep, it’s a school night – but Katsuki doesn’t give a shit. He can’t sleep again, and if he can’t sleep then why should Deku get to sleep?
Deku sits up in bed with a small scream. Katsuki doesn’t bother putting the light on, just looms over Deku’s bed.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    i'm super invested into this,
Scaramouche curls around the mangled remains of his life's purpose, and he weeps.

"Doesn't matter?" Chouji spits. "Did you know what- Do you even know how-!" But he does. Chouji knows he does. He was trapped down there in the mud with Chouji for months. In the crisis of his very own making. Slowly, Scaramouche hangs his head. "...I was angry," he confesses, voice almost a whisper.
"Angry at us?" Chouji demands. "At Higi Village, and Jakotsu Mine-?"
"No," Scaramouche forces out. He lifts his head, a little. Laughs, but it's bleak and hopeless, his gaze sliding off over Chouji's shoulder. "And you know, it was completely pointless. I don't think... I don't think she even noticed."
Chouji is at a loss for words. He looks at Zushi, more pathetic and lifeless now than he was when Chouji first found him.
All the suffering he and his family and the rest of the village went through - completely, utterly meaningless. A pointless sabotage to get the attention of a god who didn't care to answer the prayers of hundreds of her worshipers dying together, let alone those of her own son.
Pointless like a plea in the night. Pointless like scraping together hundreds of thousands of mora, as if any sum of money in the world could bring Chouji to his mother if she's decided she doesn't want to be found-
And just like that, the winds in the sails of his anger go out again, because there isn't any monster here to hate. Everything about it is just so sad.

But love is mysterious like that: it persists, and persists, and persists. His bruised heart beats loud enough for the two of them, and as the last of his resistance gives Chouji squeezes even tighter. And then, as if the apology was the first trickle from a dam, Zushi babbles quietly: "There's nothing left. There's nowhere to go. I'm useless like this. I ruined it- I can't give you anything-"

It was a shot in the dark, but it seems to hit its mark. Albedo twitches, and Jean casts a startled glance at the alchemist. But she compartmentalizes quickly. "Putting that aside-" Jean sighs. "You've listed your birthday as a question mark and your reason for seeking asylum as..." She squints. "An 'Inheritance dispute'?"

"That wasn't in the top ten worst medical procedures in my life!" Scaramouche snaps. Albedo's hope that this is a wild exaggeration is immediately dashed by the addition of, "Probably not even top twenty. Listen- you don't even know what I can do yet- what I can offer-"
"Have you considered," Albedo interrupts him, "That as a homunculus, I may already be well-informed about artificial lifeforms, and have no need of studying you?"

He was curious about the puppet from the moment Aether brought him in, yes, but it was Scaramouche's devastated reaction when he realized he'd lost the ability to use the gnosis that cinched Albedo's decision. It was a very particular kind of despair and wounded rage, a kind Albedo has encountered before, staring into his own face on a howling ridge of Dragonspine. The anguish of being unable to fulfill one's sole purpose, of being denied the meaning of your existence. Albedo himself has danced along the edge of that chasm as he struggled to come to terms with the fact that Rhinedottir had left him.

Albedo turns to him, puzzled. "Whatever did you do to make her hold such a grudge?"
Scaramouche crosses his arms. "Told her the stars were fake."
"Ah," says Albedo, in a tone that implies he finds this understandable given his knowledge of Mona, and then, with a cutting edge of inquiry, "Are they?"

Inexplicably, Scaramouche's anger simmers down from its boiling point, leaving in its place a deep, vindictive bitterness. "Oh, it's no problem," he says, falsely sunny again. "I just find it really fucking interesting how you choose your test subjects, Kreideprinz. I'm going to go do the dishes."

His purposelessness is a tough pill to swallow, especially when there's someone who could do something about it but won't. Every morning when he wakes, it's to a hollow feeling, sticky and despairing. But then he rolls over and sees the kid in the other bed and thinks, Right. Right, I made a promise.

Well, it's really no surprise Chouji never mentioned this to him, since the last time he caught Chouji with bombs he forced the kid to devote all his afternoons to sword lessons for the next month.

"You better not get him blown up," Scaramouche says, with possibly an inappropriate amount of bite to use with a child her age, but Klee only sobers up, giving a serious little nod.

Chouji surmises [Albedo is lonely, and he wants to be Zushi’s friend.]

ch 8 scara gets hungover, jesus this is sad

Just when Bakugou is starting to release the tension keeping his body taut and alert, he hears the song. With his voice. His words. To that infernal disco music. Deku hums along as he walks past, far too merry for his own fucking good.

    “It’s really catchy, Kacchan.”

Damn nerd is lucky Bakugou doesn’t smash his phone into the ground and obliterate it. Fists clenched, Bakugou watches in abject horror as Deku lifts the phone up and plays the cursed loop once more.

“Shouto - there’s a new DJDisco video out!”

“Oh,” Todoroki says thoughtfully, eyes focused on bandaging his starstruck patient. “Thanks for informing me, I haven’t seen it…”

Everyone has a youtube account these days. But admittedly, not everybody has six-hundred million subscribers waiting rather impatiently for the next ten-hour disco remix of Bakugou Katsuki’s voice.

    Bookmarker's Notes

really interesting fic about the retirement of heros and the todoroki family

[you DID NOT hire a notary for this nonsense] todo legally binds bakugou to make him soba

“I’m going to shove my hand down your throat and pull out your still beating heart and explode it. Then I’m going to reach into your ass, explode your guts, and make confetti with it. And then I’m going to put that confetti into party poppers and explode them at your funeral.”

“Alright Halfie, we are going to co-ordinate on our off-days to sit the fuck down together and I am going to educate your uncivilised ass on basic ice cream recipes and flavours. If you refuse, I will tell Izuku it was you who opened his mint condition limited edition vintage All Might Bronze Era unboxed figurine in our third year.”

Our current generation of heroes have rebuilt our faith, drop by drop, with their blood, sweat, and tears. Refusing to further the illusion of infallible heroes, they took the route of empathy and superhuman effort. We believe in these bright, young people because they have shown us time and again that their dedication to our safety is unshakeable, despite our knowledge of their own mortality. But perhaps, despite the rapid decline in villainy following the war, our habitual conflation of heroism and the divine hindered our ability to truly perceive them as people with jobs. Difficult, dangerous jobs, but jobs nonetheless.

And then came Shouto. Shouto, with his public denouncement of his father ex-pro hero Endeavour, Shouto with his untimely retirement, Shouto with his ice cream parlour. Our old heroes had always had hobbies – Present Mic’s radio show, for example – but they were always first and foremost heroes. Shouto destroyed the last remaining bastion of the old heroics with the kind of simple but precise move only he is capable of. In one bold move, he solidified in our hearts that heroism, dangerous and brave though it might be, is, in the end, a profession. Like our doctors and firefighters, heroes too get to retire. They no longer need to become irrelevant when they are too old or too injured to fight; in fact, they no longer need to push themselves so far beyond that they cannot afford the time for a private life. They can simply retire when they choose to and take up other things.

“How do you keep hoping that That Man can do better one day?”
Fuyumi frowns at that. If Shouto was better at reading facial expressions, he’d argue that she looks sad.
“What else is left to hope for?” she asks, and Shouto doesn’t have an answer to that.
    “What do you mean?”
“You brought us all back together”, his sister smiles, putting the gyoza down to face him properly. “You did this, Shouto. I know it might be selfish of me to hope that one day, that one day we can all be a family again…” Fuyumi’s warm, warm hand lands on his arm. “…after everything that’s happened, I don’t expect any of you to hope for it too.”
Shouto thinks about all the times Fuyumi snuck him food late at night. How she took over the cooking for the household after…after everything and how she cried when he came home after the USJ incident. He thinks about how he’d held her, motherly and sisterly all in one, close to her chest and she’d cried and cried until she couldn’t anymore. He thinks about how she leaves mitsarashi dangos at Touya’s shrine every year, because he used to love them. He thinks about how she is painstakingly making gyozas from scratch today, because Natsuo and his wife are coming over.
    “Why?”
There’s something shimmery in her eyes when she speaks. “I was there, you know. Before Touya, before…before mom. I’m older than…I’m older than you all, and I remember when it used to be different.” She looks up at the ceiling for a second, drawing a breath. Then a pained smile forms across her face as she looks at Shouto. “Sometimes it’s like everyone forgets.”
Shouto doesn’t know what to say to that.
“Is it wrong,” she continues, voice trembling, “is it wrong to want something that’s impossible?”

“Don’t undervalue your kindness, idiot”, Bakugou says, and his voice is soft and raspy and Shouto can tell he isn’t used to talking like this. “It’s easy for him to ask for it, but it costs you everything to give.”
And Shouto thinks about Izuku again, and his naïve, beautiful sort of kindness. Izuku gives without asking, without ever expecting anything in return. Shouto doesn’t know anyone kinder than Izuku.
Shouto thinks about Bakugou too, and what it takes to atone. He thinks about the cost of a life, and the cost of a pride greater than anything he could imagine, and he thinks of nights spent after labourious days of fighting just to sit and talk ice cream flavours with ash still in your hair, and he thinks of learning to make waffle cones from hands charred by fire.
