Summary
You couldn’t get far in Riddle’s town without hearing some warning about merfolk. One could expect as much from a town bordering the sea. There was always some rumor going around about sunken ships or sailors being lured to their deaths. And as a result the land-folk became to hate the people who dwelled under the water. Just as much as they feared them. Nearly everyone believed in the threat beneath the waves.
Except, of course, for Riddle.
It was just the way his parents had raised him. Why worry over merfolk when no one had seen one in a few decades? Besides, he had much more important things to worry about. Like studying and working and maybe eventually getting away from his house with the least amount of conflict possible. As far as Riddle was concerned, everything was going to be peaceful.
Unfortunately for him; the universe, (and a pair of eels) had very different, very annoying plans...

Riddle wouldn’t meet his soulmate until his first year at NRC.
The entrance ceremony was already in full swing, and Riddle had been focused, listening intently to every word from his future professors, mentally noting every rule, every expectation.
Then someone grabbed his hair.
“It’s red, but it’s not hot!” an obnoxious voice said, tugging at the strands like a child testing a toy.
Riddle’s reaction was immediate, reflexive. Without hesitation, he drew his magic pen, set the boy’s sleeve ablaze, and promptly hurled him across the room.
Gasps filled the hall. Riddle was trembling with fury, vision narrowing. How dare he? Who the hell did he think he was?
It took two teachers to hold him back before he could lunge again. His heart pounded, magic sparking at his fingertips.
And then—finally—he looked.
The idiot who’d just ruined his first impression was grinning up at him from the floor, still half-smoking from the fire spell. And the moment their eyes met—
Riddle’s world exploded into color.

“How ‘bout this,” Floyd said. “If I can’t do it, I’ll leave you alone. And if I can…” Floyd looked Riddle up and down, and a menacing grin nearly split his face in half. He leaned in until his lips brushed the shell of Riddle’s ear. “Then you’re mine.”

Floyd reached out and set a finger under Riddle’s chin, lifting it up with far more delicacy than he had ever expected from him. Riddle felt his breath catch and his cheeks heat. It was as though the winds from the Scalding Sands had descended upon them, ravaging his throat with its dry heat.
Riddle had once read a dictionary for fun, yet he could recall none of its contents in that moment.
Words never seemed to escape Floyd, however. With an airy little laugh, he squeezed Riddle’s chin with his thumb and said, voice low as though he was sharing a secret: “Keep your head above the water, ‘kay?”
With that, Floyd strode off, hands in his pockets. Riddle was left alone by the door, which he hurried through, eager to escape the cloying feeling that had clamped around his chest.
No matter how far he marched, though, he couldn’t escape it. He could never quite shake off the feeling of those eyes, yellow and grey, fierce and soft, like a canary thrashing in its cage.
