For a moment, Ilya worries that Shane is looking so intently that he is going to see right through him, maybe somehow see into the past and watch how, after last time – after Shane ran away – Ilya sat with his head in his hands on the couch for a long time, unsure of whether to bitterly laugh or cry at the fact that it was him – Ilya – who had so casually tried and tremendously failed to move them forward – that time.

Truly, their son was a testament to the quality of both their character’s–Shane’s soft underbelly nurtured by his father’s patient tone and earnest gaze and his shrewdness and talent sharpened by his mother’s fierce mettle. Shane was the sum of his parent’s parts, yet entirely his own, and Ilya was very grateful to the tender, yet firm, hands that had shaped the man he loved. But right now, well, right now Ilya was not their biggest fan.
