Dean Winchester was going to die.
When he didn't present at sixteen as expected, Dean was illegally recorded as an Alpha. He has known for a long time that he wasn't one, but to stay and protect his young brothers, Dean accepted the lie and hid his true nature until it couldn't be hidden anymore and his first heat came.
None of it mattered after Dean was framed and sent to prison.
An Alpha prison.
Shot full of suppressants that would give him at most a month until his true nature was revealed, Dean was thrown into a dangerous world where if even one Alpha discovered the truth, Dean's life would be forfeit.
Fate has a funny way of working though, in even the filthiest, most dangerous of places.

What Dean doesn’t expect is the quiet.
Night after night, he and Cas keep ending up alone together after everyone else has gone to bed; sharing a drink, trading small observations, circling questions Dean never quite managed to ask when it mattered most. About that night. About what Cas said. About what any of it was supposed to mean.
Cas answers him with the same steady honesty he always has.
And somewhere in the middle of all that ordinary life; between road fatigue, soft silences, half-finished jokes, and the private ritual; Dean begins to realize he may not be searching for Cas’s meaning anymore.
He may be trying to find his own.

The angels came and got Cas out of Purgatory, but they forgot to lock the door behind them. Benny has been guarding the rift they made, trying to make sure nothing gets out. When a monster gets past him, he chooses to follow it out and kill it himself, rather than risk letting it hurt someone on the other side. By pure coincidence, a hunter and freshly-turned werewolf named Garth is nearby, and they take down the creature together. Garth is kind, brave, and funny, but he’s also clearly lost and struggling in the wake of his turning, needing a shoulder to lean on until he gets his feet back under him. Benny was intending to go straight back to Purgatory, but he’s always been a sucker for a hunter in distress.

Sam believed that every bad thing that had happened to them since Dean got back from Hell was because his brother fucked a priest.
Dean would argue against that logic as he’s done a lot of other things that should be considered more blasphemous, not that he believed in universal retribution in the first place.

Cas sputters for the right words. He can’t exactly say “I thought you were disgusted with me”. Something tells him that that's not what Dean needs to hear right now.
Before he can find a suitable answer, Dean’s already speaking again.
“You won’t talk to me, you won’t be alone with me, you won’t look at me, and you looked like you’d rather get frostbite than get in the bed with me,” Dean rambles, voice getting thick and hoarse in an attempt to keep tears choked back.
TLDR: Post-canon destiel, thinking one another's feelings are unrequited when that's (predictably) not truly the case. An abandoned cabin in a blizzard, some mild hypothermia, and huddling for warmth forces them to talk it out...and let their bodies do some talking too. :)
