Everyone around him was waiting for him to break. Multiple teachers had pulled him aside to tell him that he could leave class early whenever he needed to. Asterid and Willamae seemed to be corresponding behind his back, as new bottles of sleep syrup appeared weekly on his nightstand. Burdock stuck to him like glue, afraid that Haymitch would have some sort of psychotic break or slit his wrists if he was left alone with his thoughts for longer than five minutes. Even Tam Amber and Clerk Carmine were going soft on him.
District 12 had never had a victor before. They didn’t know what to do with him.

Summary
Chopper is used to being alone. That is what was safe for everyone else. He'd only ever made two exceptions in the matter, and both of them were now under his father's radar because of him. He knows they deserve better. He knows he doesn't deserve them. But, he will do whatever he can to protect those he loves.
