Summary
In the thick of the Ardennes, a solitary man builds his house far from any civilisation. His name is Max and he guards a secret that sets him apart from the rest of humankind: something more savage takes his place. One night, his senses detect a presence. Something has crossed the river that marks the boundary of his territory. Something that moves with an impossible pulse and leaves a trail of blood in its wake. Driven by instinct and fury, Max does what he has ever done with intruders: he hunts. But the prey proves not to be what he expected. On the far side of the waterfall, he finds a terrified youth who scarcely recalls who he is or how he came to be there. He has the eyes of a predator and the pulse of a victim. He flees from something he does not understand. Max shall attempt to resolve the matter in the most rational fashion he knows. What he does not yet know is that certain creatures do not fit within the rules he believed immutable. And that compassion, when least expected, can assume the strangest of guises. Summary
No matter what angle he runs it from he can’t figure out why Charles would make him of all people his emergency contact. Sure they’ve gotten over their silly childhood rivalry and Max would be comfortable calling him a friend, but that’s about as far as he’d stretch it. And that is nowhere near emergency contact material.
Beside, Max would’ve really appreciated a heads up. A simple “Hey, please make life or death decisions for me from now on, Max.” would’ve been nice.
Well whatever, Charles has made him his emergency contract and is now apparently not in a state to make his own medical decisions so if he disagrees with whatever Max decides for him he’ll have to suck it up and remember that he’s the one that did this.
