Summary
Crowley’s dark nails scrape at floorboards as he tries to climb to his feet, smoke choking him. Splinters surely find their way into his fingers, but he doesn’t care, can’t care, as he tries to call out. His voice feels raw, trying to push through a throat and mouth full of embers. He barely pushes himself up to his knees, his feet, while his eyes burn.
“Aziraphale? Aziraphale!” His gasps burn, his hands screaming as he collapses against a bookshelf. He whispers, “Aziraphale, please…”
He shuts his eyes, looking, aching, for any sign of his angel, but he can’t. He’s always, always been able to sense him, at least a slight shimmer somewhere in the far reaches of his mind, but there’s nothing.
He has nothing.
God, shit, he was right, it was over, and Aziraphale was gone, there wasn’t--
“Crowley?”
(Or: Crowley has nightmares, and Aziraphale decides to help him.)

Abruptly, Sam wonders how many people have put a friendly hand on Bucky in the last ninety-odd years. How many times did touch like this mean pain and suffering, instead of someone trying to take care of him? And it makes his heart ache, the thought of how much devastation and roughness Bucky’s been through, denied this kind of casual, compassionate touch that Sam doesn’t even think twice about offering.
Experimentally, he pulls his hand back. Bucky makes this low whining noise that makes Sam put his hand back immediately. And then he watches the way Bucky leans into it, eyelids fluttering like he’s almost falling asleep like this. Doesn’t even seem conscious of it, like he’s gone somewhere else in his head while Sam’s patching him up. And it’s – Sam doesn’t know what to think, doesn’t know what to feel. Because this is Bucky, and he’s showing such terrifying vulnerability, and Sam –
Sam can’t help but wonder if Bucky still expects pain every time someone touches him.

When Sam started to travel between Delacroix and Brooklyn to be with Bucky and Steve, he didn't mean to develop feelings for the grumpy ex-assassin. “This? This happens all the time, don’t worry about me,” said Bucky, but Sam knew that was wrong, he knew it as he kept holding Bucky’s hand even after Bucky was fully standing, “Are you okay? Those pumpkins flew everywhere.”
This wasn’t happening to Sam.
“Mr. Bucky, where should we put the pumpkins?” asked AJ as he and Cass held armfuls of pumpkins in their hands.
“Oh. Uh. There’s a pile in the back,” explained Bucky as he released Sam’s hand and started to gather some of the pumpkins from Sam’s nephew’s arms, “I got these, don’t you worry – ”
Bucky toppled over his broken booth again, and Sam knew it to be true. He knew what he had feared had come to pass.
Sam wasn’t going to let it happen.

Sam had seen plenty of traumatic injuries in his lifetime, between his time as a field medic and the days he spent as an Avenger, but he had never seen someone survive with injuries as severe as Bucky’s. The abnormal movement of his friend’s chest was enough to make him feel nauseous, and he threw up the moment the injured man was out of sight. If it weren’t for the serum in his veins, Sam was sure the impact would have killed him instantly. As it was, it was a toss up whether or not the soldier would pull through the emergency surgery.

Less than a week before Christmas is not a great time to realize you really need to get your best friend and work partner-turned romantic partner another present.
The thing is, Sam got Bucky’s presents months ago. One of them because it required some time to be made, and the other because Sam had gone on a late-night online shopping spree a while back. But that was before he and Bucky took the next step into an actual romantic relationship, and also before Bucky’s psychic power kicked in, and suddenly the handmade knitted blanket and books Sam’s already got neatly packed and wrapped, hidden in a closet in Sarah’s house, don’t seem like enough.
When your partner's got a psychic power that works by touch, the personal touch seems a hell of a lot more important in a gift. After all, Sam knows Bucky can quite literally feel that personal touch and everything it entails. That means Sam needs to make him a last-minute, handmade gift, and hope like hell that Bucky will get good vibes from it.
