Hua Cheng's heart is hammering against his ribs. "Let's say, hypothetically, I wanted to see you again. How would I go about doing that?"

Xie Lian's lips curve into a slow, knowing smirk. His tone is teasing, and it's painfully obvious. "You're THE Hua Cheng. Something tells me you'd figure it out."

    Or
    ———

“I am proposing a deal, Alhaitham,” Nahida mutters, catching Alhaitham’s attention once again. The tall man looks over to her and raises an eyebrow, “And what would that be?”

The smile that irks Alhaitham once again paints over the Archon’s lips  — and this time, he knows it’s meant to piss him off.

“I will approve of your resignation in exchange for the Aaru Village’s approval of the developmental plans.”

Since the Dendro Archon is as kind as she is wise, she decided to give Alhaitham one last quest - which, once finished, would give him the freedom to return to his easy and normal life as a scribe. Alhaitham, forced to abide by the words of his Archon, sets out to the desert where he pretends to be a traveler, to devise a plan to get the desert dwellers to concur to the Akademiya’s plans. The quest turns thorny when he meets a dancer with scarlet eyes in Caravan Ribat.

“Okay, but we’re pretending — there’s some sort of boundary and freedom that needs to be established. We could be fake boyfriends, and I could be a loyal lap dog or how you make me out to be, but that isn’t enough assurance for you that I won’t be going after other people.”

“Who said we’re going to be fake boyfriends?” Kaveh mutters.

    Alhaitham stammers, “W-We aren’t?”

A new neighbor has moved in, and Alhaitham might have already gotten himself entangled with his ploys and whimsies.

    “Were we friends?” Phainon asks.

“You drove a blade through my back."

“Great friends, then.” Phainon laughs. The wind selfishly ushers the sound away.

“You hated me,” Mydei insists, recalling a different Phainon, who was somber and fire-blessed, vicious and gorgeous, a Phainon who had a hand over Mydei’s throat and the other over his heart, and who squeezed until Mydei could almost believe himself to be mortal; a Phainon he had cherished in his own clumsy, lacking manner, and who had died without knowing he was loved. “And you traded your life for mine.”

Phainon keeps looking towards the sea, crouched, a gentle smile dancing upon his lips.

“Then I couldn’t have hated you,” he says.

In the sand, he draws a castle flanked by two tall towers.

    ---

Or: Mydei learns how long and lonely immortality really is, and then learns it doesn't have to be.
