    Summary

During probably the worst day of his life, Vash Saverem crash-lands on the nearby planet of December. After a very abrupt first meeting, he moves in with Nicholas D. Wolfwood and a friendship starts to bloom. A search party looking for the famous Rem Saverem's missing son might throw a wrench in things though, especially since he's not ready to face his family after running away.

    Summary

Wolfwood watches her leave, feeling trepidation in the pit of his stomach. What had Vash managed to get himself into this time? Wolfwood's normal skills of shoot first and ask questions later are of no use here, and he pauses before opening the door and peering inside.

It's obviously a storage closet of some kind; there are cleaning materials on the floor and a mop propped up against one side. A chair has been dragged in and set against the other wall, and Wolfwood lets his eyes scan over Vash. He's not wearing what he'd had on earlier, not just the coat; he's in a set of sweats and a tee that Wolfwood has seen him sleep in. His eyes are closed, and he's leaning against the wall, seemingly not noticing or at least not caring that someone has opened the door. There are drying white smears across his cheeks and chin, and vomit down the front of his shirt. Wolfwood swallows down the instinctual anger, the rage boiling within him.

This is what Vash had been doing on his own? It's clear enough, even to Wolfwood, what's been going on here, and even if it wasn't the large wet spot on the crotch of Vash's sweatpants would confirm.

    Summary

His blood feels like ice in his veins.

Instinctually, he edges closer to Meryl’s side. He doesn’t want to fully shield her, as though she can’t defend herself, but the urge is there. “Spare her,” he says, because it’s the first thing that comes to mind. “Please. She wasn’t the one to shoot you. She—”

When rustlers threaten the sanctity of Thompson Farms three years after everything, Vash takes a bullet to protect Meryl. His body, however, isn't what it used to be. The path to recovery is slow and painful, and Vash is left to figure out what his mortality means to his companions, and to him.

    Summary

Vash has lived more lives than most, he knows.

He would feel restless in any other world, but here he finds himself content with waiting most of the time. It’s been about twenty or thirty odd years, he thinks— he has so much to tell him about, things about technology and new feats, about the small ways humans are finding ways to be impossibly kind as much as they are cruel. Thirty years is enough for rises and falls of events; humans are busy.

(When you last saw it, December was half as large. Did you know? There are ferns now, they’ve started planting things in the earth. I grew a carrot as large as my head last week.)

(Did you miss it? Wherever you were, did you miss it?)
