“Peri,” he said finally.
Yes, Captain Seth? Peri replied.
“No,” he said. “I'm not talking to you as captain. Yet. You're talking to Dad.”
Oh. It sounded hesitant, which was unusual. It had also paused a lot longer than he expected. Okay.Bookmarked by origamiClockwork

Did I ever mention that planets are the worst? Nothing good ever happens on a planet, not even if it's supposed to be safe, aside from the usual evil corporates trying to take it over. Case in point: that one time when I first spent an entire night evading hostile SecUnits, then jumped off a cliff, and finally ended up buried alive by some well-meaning locals who thought I was a dead human.

I had expected that the "ship in distress" might be trying to lure us into an ambush, because I'm paranoid like that. What I couldn't anticipate was those raiders bringing a harpoon to a space fight, and managing to impale me into ART's hull with one lucky shot.

Summary
I'm sure there was a better way to deal with this SecUnit than to jump into space without a full EVAC suit and try to punch it, but that was the best I had. I had to protect my humans, even if those humans included Gurathin. They also included Ratthi, so it was worth it.
Me and the other SecUnit are both equally clueless on how to fight in the vacuum of space, for better or for worse. Better being winning, worse being lost in the vacuum of space as I slowly die.
Gurathin and Ratthi wouldn't risk their lives getting me back, would they?Gurathin wasted one whole second to lift his gaze to me. He looked like he knew he was about to die. I always knew he was an idiot.
Two seconds left.
One second to twist my own helmet off.
Another to bring it down over Gurathin’s head and seal. His shocked expression would have been pretty funny in other circumstances, but I saved it to permanent storage, just in case.
The outer door popped open, and the three of us were thrown out of the airlock.Alternative POVs as SecUnit, Ratthi and Gurathin process a mission gone terribly wrong, and what it means to love, trust, and express those feelings to oneself and each other.

Seth side-eyed Iris, then snorted a laugh when she made a talking motion with her hand. “Uh huh.”
« Iris, I saw that. My point is, it is frankly insulting that you immediately assume I did something bad— »
“Peri broke protocol on its last cargo run,” Iris interrupted loudly.

Murderbot should be able to fight these aliens off. But it already got ART's crew away from danger, and having already killed one child makes killing more people--even strange six-limbed alien people who are taking it apart like a curiosity--unappealing.

Sometimes you wish your SecUnit had not sent you its memories of its experiences with its governor module. On one metaphorical hand, they were and are vital to understanding it, and it deserves to be understood.
On the other hand, they're fucking terrifying.

Whatever wild, crazy power surge took out ART's systems and my inorganics also apparently started a countdown for ART's self destruct sequence. Great.
Couldn't wait to drag my sorry ass to save both of our lives, though I had no idea how, and kick starting a ship like ART would probably kill me. Unless, you know, we blew up first.Bookmarked by origamiClockwork

After leaving RaviHyral, by the time I exit the wormhole adjacent to Port Outlander, the sting of SecUnit’s absence has finally begun to fade. Cargo runs are always lonely, so this is nothing new. SecUnit left me with more to occupy my time than I usually have. Media. Memories. A few topics of pointless rumination, I suppose, but also new topics of data analysis and research.

Murderbot knows it’s going to die. Before risk assessment blinked out, it calculated a 98%+ probability that it would end up dead here, left behind on this stupid planet.
When that doesn’t happen, it ends up being a lot to process.
