The nature of the thing, he thinks, is that he can't and won’t remember whatever it is that Jay fixed in 2008. Because he fixed it, back to the way it had been—and for him, for Matt, there never would have been another way. He’s never left this timeline. This is his timeline. Whatever Jay did was, technically, outside the bounds of his reality. Technically, he’s not sure this Jay is even the same Jay that existed before that morning, the day of the skydiving plan, the day he got sick. How could he be? He lived his whole life with a whole other Matt, a Matt who died for him. He, Matt, is the replacement Matt. The respawn after Game Over.
