A half-packed suitcase on the bed told of Alfred’s half-functional efforts to jump the gun.

Summary
Kaito is so trusting and genuine. Sometimes it feels like he’s the most precious thing Kokichi has ever had, and most baffling of all, he wants Kokichi too. It would be so easy to tear him apart. It would be safer, for him and for Kokichi, if Kokichi didn’t fight against his immediate instincts and pushed Kaito away as hard as he can.
But… he can’t. Because as terrified as Kokichi is of hurting Kaito, he’s too selfish to try and deny himself what he wants so badly when it’s right in front of his face. So he gets why Maki’s about to grind him into pâté, he does. Maybe she’ll have the decency to make it quick. She’s never really been the type for needless formality.
Maki stops abruptly, so Kokichi stops too, a couple steps ahead of her, slowly revolving on his heel. She doesn’t speak right away. Kokichi takes the opportunity to try and scrutinise her expression.

Geez, she doesn’t have to say it. Kokichi swallows thickly and opens his mouth to respond.
“But you know that already, don’t you?” Maki speaks before he can find the words, her eyes finally settling on his face. “If… if it was me, and I was dating Kaito, like you are now… it’d be all I could think about.”

“They’d be here too, to greet you, but we didn’t want to overwhelm you with a big group.” Kaede explains softly. “Actually, we’ve been sending in one person at a time to be there when people woke up, because that feels more manageable, but- well, all three of us wanted to be here when you got up. It wouldn’t have been fair if any of us had been absent.”
“Oh yeah?” Kokichi raises an eyebrow.
“I know when I woke up,” Kaede looks over at Rantaro, a meaningful look on her face. (Rantaro’s smile diminishes, turns into something more sympathetic.) “I broke down because I failed.”

Kokichi dies.
(Mostly, though, he wakes up from the simulation, deals with the knowledge that his plan failed, and talks to everyone else too.)

There’s silence from Kaito’s end, and for a minute Kokichi thinks he’s just gonna lower the press down onto him without saying anything else, which would honestly be easier than forcing one last conversation. Unfortunately, as much as Kaito is an idiot, he has a heart. Even for someone like Kokichi. “Is there anything that I can-” he pauses, and Kokichi practically hears his hesitation. “That I can do… when we get out? When we get back to the outside world? Anybody you want me to talk to? Or…”
With a note of bitterness, Kokichi thinks, everyone who I remember probably isn’t even real, bucko, but in lieu of saying that, he presses his lips together. Kaito is probably gonna die, anyway. He can let the dude die without ever knowing that. It’s barely a mercy considering everything that Kokichi has done. “Nah. You really think there’d be anyone out there for someone like me?” And then, before Kaito can protest, he adds, “Just press the button, Momota,” and screws his eyes shut. His words carry a lot more conviction than he feels.
He’s half expecting Kaito to talk again, to say something else in a lame attempt at sentimentality, but then there’s a click, and-
Kokichi wakes up.

Whether or not Kokichi Ouma is a real person, ever was a real person, he never had any self-preservation, not in any life, and that much Kokichi can say with certainty. -

Her fury threatens to climb out of her chest in the form of the vines she can feel weaving a path under the school. Her magic slips into their roots so easily, calling forth sharp thorns that slice through the earth and stone beneath them. She could take Bosha down easily, make it so she doesn’t play another game of grudgby for the rest of the season.
Still, she forces herself to breathe in for four, out for four, and again. Let Hunter handle it for now. She can kick Boscha’s butt for this some other time.
Just stay calm.

She collects herself and resigns herself to glare at the bully from her friend’s side.
And then Boscha delivers the killing blow. “Hah! Figures! Of course half-a-witch-Willow would find another half-a-witch to befriend.”
