Nick believed in fire, in brimstone, and a God who may not have intended to be cruel, but who’s indifference amounted to the same thing as cruelty. He knew his soul was weighed down by his sins and there was no way he could ever atone. He didn't believe he could be better, but Vash made Nick feel like he should be better.
