Summary
The BAU is called in when teenagers across New York City are found dead and tortured. Joining the investigation late, after being held up by another case, the team is immediately overwhelmed by the unusual nature of the case. Both the families of the victims and the lead Detective Jackson seem to be hiding something. Tim Drake is a solitary creature, whether by necessity or by natural predisposition. But he’s good at being alone. He’s learned to enjoy his own company, to take solace in his own cognizance. Aided by the brisk air of Gotham’s night air and a thrilling sense of independence, Tim learns that some things feel more special when you get to keep them for yourself. Unaccompanied walks down the school halls and singular movie tickets and dinners-for-one aren’t so bad when he can entertain himself with his own thoughts.
Tim has become so good at being alone, he can almost pretend he isn’t desperate for the unconditional love and companionship that a soulmate would guarantee.
It would be nice, Tim thinks, to have someone in his life who actually wants him. Someone who won’t leave every chance they get. Someone who enjoys his presence instead of merely tolerating it. Someone for whom he isn’t an obligation.
Still his wrist remains blank.
Until it doesn't.

“Well, I’d offer to pretend to be your girlfriend, but I actually am trying to get laid tonight,” Cassie explained, then drained the rest of her glass.
“Don’t worry, Kon,” Tim said, without putting an ounce of forethought into it. “I’ll scare them off for you.”
Or, Tim pretends to be Conner's boyfriend, just to help him avoid unwanted attention. Because that's what friends do. Pretend to be romantically involved even though they are definitely not interested in each other in that way and it would totally never happen. Definitely.

Living in the manor was so different from the cold mansion he had grown up in. Tim never felt lonely there despite its enormous size. Even with his busy schedule of juggling Batman's responsibilities and being WE’s CEO, Bruce still managed to spend more time with Tim than his parents ever had. Dick came to visit every weekend, taking Tim on fun outings across the city. He and Steph would hang out in the den after school on weekdays. He and Cass would spend quiet afternoons reading in the library while she practiced on the grand piano in the corner. He could always count on Alferd’s subtle presence in the manor, diligently cleaning or preparing a home-cooked meal. Tim was never alone there; it was a bit overwhelming at first, but it was nice.
Tim should have remembered that good things never last.
