James Fitzjames had always known he was worth more than his circumstances.

He’d been a valiant officer in his mind long before they’d bothered to make him one on paper; he’d traveled hundreds of miles overland alone on special assignment and sailed Clio halfway ‘round the world and he was a war hero who had survived a bullet the likes of which had taken down Lord Nelson himself.

It wasn’t quite enough, they’d said, for captaincy on such a monumental expedition. But there was a way he could prove himself, if he was interested?

Of course he’d been interested. How could he not?

Francis did not think a bad-tempered back deserved much sympathy. There were others who had lost more, suffered worse. Those who lived, as he had, could not rightly grouse about so much as the weather. But when James said, “Let me,” thumbing at the divot in Francis’ spine, Francis could only murmur, “Go on.” James had a way of breaking open his deepest certainties.

Through the window Francis watched the shops and office buildings crawl by. A streetlight was out at one corner, and in the new dark the window showed his reflection. He wondered if that was how James saw him. A watery shadow, a face invisible in the light.

Francis takes a little blue pill on the way home from dinner. James doesn't know. Then they get stuck in traffic.

    Summary

Before the rescue, and before James’s body had begun to break down in earnest, he’d started to find the nighttime cold on the shale unbearable. He’d shiver for hours before passing out from exhaustion—excruciating, when every movement caused him a spark of pain. One night the cold was particularly sharp—the flaps of their tent snapped loud as thunderclaps in the unforgiving wind—and he’d been shocked to feel his cot dip behind him, Francis’s solid form pressing up against his back.

“Francis,” he’d said, heart pounding, “what are you doing?”

“Whisht,” Francis had hissed. “Can’t sleep for the chattering of your teeth. Now rest.”

Captain Fitzjames was positively buoyant. “Here is what I shall do for you, Francis. Since you are determined to see your Miss Cracroft again, and to gain a private audience – perhaps renew any lingering affections that have burned bright ere these icy winters – then I shall play the role with gusto, so you may endeavor to practise this encounter prior to our journey home.”

A brief silence fell over the dining table. Captain Crozier’s countenance was nothing short of dumbfounded.

“I pray you repeat yourself, sir.”

James teetered, unintentionally leaning most of his weight into whoever’d caught him, and the two of them staggered until they fell against a brick wall. James had one fist in the man’s buttery leather jacket and another at the front of his jumper, and as he pulled his gaze up to look at the man’s face, the bottom of his stomach fell out.

“Professor Crozier,” he choked, flushing vibrantly red. Francis was staring down at him with wide eyes and parted lips, his mouth fashioned into a lax ‘o’ of surprise that had absolutely no right to work James up the way it did. “I—I’m so sorry; I didn’t see you.”

For reasons James has not analysed, he has always enjoyed the comfortable assumption that Francis Crozier was already married. No one has ever informed him thus – indeed, now he thinks on it, several men may have informed him to the contrary – but he always had a strangely secure idea of Francis as a married man, and of what a Mrs Crozier might be like.

“What was that?” Crozier took a firmer hold of Thomas’ chin. “What did you say?"

Thomas looked up at him, wide-eyed, and Crozier felt his throat move under his fingertip. Thomas hesitated another moment before answering. “D-daddy. Sir. That was what I- I nearly said.”

Crozier could feel his eyebrow raise of its own accord. ...Well. In for a penny, in for a pound.
