"Thom and Alan of Trebond,” Coram told the guard who motioned for them to halt. “They’re here to begin their service at Court.”
The guard glanced over the three travelers. Alanna could hear her heart beating in her ears, so strong it must be visible through her clothes. This was the first test. Would the people at the palace see through her? Or would they, like the innkeepers on the road, see short hair and a boy’s name and not think further?
The guard stepped back. “Welcome to the palace,” he said, and let them in.
Directed by the Gods, Maude sends both Thom and Alanna to page training.

Summary
In March 439, King Roald V of Conté summons Alan of Trebond to Court because he needs a friendly face after losing Lianne. Alan arrives to a series of increasingly unpleasant realizations, and for the second time in his life, is forced to take action. Oh, and learn how to be a parent (a whole twenty years after he should have), but he's committed to learn even if it kills him. (Better to kill him than his son, daughter, lover, or stepson).

Summary
What Maude sees in the fire is too dire to allow the twins to switch places.
Thom goes to the palace, intent on learning magic despite the forced distractions of training for a knighthood he has no desire for. He didn't account for friends, mentors, romance, and the deadly web surrounding Roger of Conté.
Alanna goes to the convent, intent on hating it. And she might have, if everyone at the convent was like Delia of Eldorne, but to her surprise, women are more varied than her preconceptions bred from her isolation. And yet, whenever something seems like it's within her grasp, things outside of her control sweep in to upend her life.
Or, Thom receives actual mentors and learns how to make friends, Alanna is really Going Through It, there are more than 4 named noblewomen, Roger remains a treasonous creep, being a favorite of the Gods is troublesome to the extreme, and even friendship cannot prevent all tragedies
