Will pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance, already feeling a headache beginning to form in his temples. "I’m kind of in the middle of a lecture here, can this wait?”
“I’m afraid it can’t. We need your assistance urgently.”
“And why do you need me?” Will was unable to suppress the bitterness in his tone, “You’ve got plenty of experts and doctors on your staff. I’m just a grad student, and I’m halfway across the country. What could I possibly do that no one else could?”
Dr. Owens cleared his throat on the other end of the line, “You’re the only one who’s been there and made it out alive. Honestly, we could use your expertise. We’ve caught a specimen. A live one. And you’re definitely going to want to see this.”
Or, it's 1998 and the Upside Down is still alive and kicking, and something new just came out.

Summary
'What the fuck.'
He really had no idea how this would go, but this? Barely even two sentences exchanged? Fuck, he would have rather Will scream at him in front of everyone. Tell him how fucked up it was that he never reached out. After Will came out. After he told Will he was still his best friend. After his sister died.
‘Tell me, tell me Will that you’re mad at me. Tell me that’s why you never called again, so I have something concrete to blame it on.’
But the nothingness? Like they just barely knew each other. That was so much worse.
OR
Palm Springs Movie (2020) inspired, Mike and Will meet after 3 years of not speaking, at Jonathan and Nancy's wedding. They get trapped in a time-loop and navigate their years of lost friendship, while Mike has to deal with why he stopped talking to Will in the first place; and it might just be because he's in love with him.

“D’you ever consider I did it on purpose? I am a bit of an attention-seeker, you know.” Perhaps Mike is drunker than Will initially thought.
“What?”
“How else could I get the chance to talk to you alone?” Will feels like the air was just knocked out of him. Of course Mike is joking, but there’s a hint of truth to the statement. He was looking for ways to get Will alone. Will isn’t sure whether this information excites him or terrifies him.
“You’re nutty,” Will says, physically shaking the worries from his head.
“Maybe so,” Mike says, “but it worked.”
